Guidelines for ventilation/perfusion (V/P SPECT) in pulmonary embolism
In this issue of JMIRS, we are introducing a new feature of interest to the imaging community, the publication of guidelines endorsed by the Canadian Association of Nuclear Medicine (CANM), beginning with Guidelines for Ventilation/Perfusion (V/P SPECT) in Pulmonary Embolism, which were originally approved by the CANM in November 2018. These are among several CANM guidelines that have been shared with the CANM membership but not previously published in indexed medical journals, thereby limiting their visibility and reach, a shortcoming this initiative is meant to address. Phantom study investigating the repeatability of radiomic features with alteration of image acquisition parameters in magnetic resonance imaging
Radiomics is the high throughput analysis of medical imaging data using computer algorithms, which produces thousands of quantifiable features [1,2]. These features have been shown to correlate with underlying pathological and genetic findings [1,2]. In recent years there has been an exponential increase in the number of articles and studies produced within the field of radiomics. Its potential to provide imaging biomarkers to enable personalised medicine has been acknowledged. However, as a field, radiomics is not without its limitations. The radiology department as a sentinel in fall prevention among Filipino older adult patients
Accidental falls are a serious yet underreported form of adverse event in hospitals. Falls account for the leading cause of injury and mortality among older adults. The World Health Organization (WHO) in 2021 reported that an estimated 64,000 individuals die annually from falls globally. In the Philippines, about 53.6% of older Filipinos are experiencing falls from a small population-specific setting and they are more likely to experience functional declines than the younger population. The radiology departments and radiologic technologists (RTs) play a vital role in preventing accidental falls among Filipino older adult p...

Queering Cancer: Developing a resource to support sexual and gender diverse people affected by cancer
Cancer affects everyone; there are about 80,000 cancer deaths every year in Canada. However, depending on our backgrounds, identities, and circumstances, how we experience cancer will vary. According to the 2018 census, Canada is home to approximately one million sexual and gender diverse (SGD) people (including, but not limited to, those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, and two-spirit). These SGD people account for 4% of the total population [1]. SGD people may encounter discrimination when accessing healthcare and often engage with healthcare professionals lacking education about their needs [2]. (So...

The shortage of radiographers: A global crisis in healthcare
Just a few years before the COVID-19 pandemic, the World Health Organisation had forecast a shortfall of eighteen million healthcare professionals by 2030 [1]. Today, as healthcare systems worldwide struggle to recover from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the healthcare professionals ’ understaffing issue is significant. The stress, fatigue and burnout experienced by many healthcare professionals have affected the radiography profession as well. The rising demands for imaging and radiation therapy services combined with chronic deficiencies create a major understaffing issue i n the radiography workforce [2]. (Sourc...

Decision-making processes in image guided radiotherapy: A think aloud study
3D Image Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT) using Cone Beam Computer Tomography (CBCT) has been implemented for a range of treatment sites across the UK in the last decade. A paucity of evidence exists to understand how radiation therapists (RTTs) make clinical decisions during image interpretation as part of the IGRT process. The aim of this study was to investigate the decision-making processes used by RTTs during image interpretation of IGRT. (Source: Journal of Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences)

Ultrasound assessment of testicular volume - An interobserver variability study
Ultrasonography measurement of the testicles and subsequent calculation of the testicular volume is recommended as a part of a standard scrotal ultrasound examination. The interobserver variability of testicular volume measurement has implications for surgical recommendations. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the interobserver variability in the measurement of testicular volume. (Source: Journal of Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences)
