Radiography students ’ perceptions of the attributes required for clinical educators
A clinical educator (CE) is responsible for the clinical training and supervising of students to acquire skills and knowledge during Work Integrated Learning (WIL). The CE can have a positive or negative influence on students depending on their clinical and interpersonal attributes. The purpose of this qualitative exploratory-descriptive and contextual study was to explore and describe students' perceptions regarding the attributes of their CEs upon the successful implementation of the degree programme at the HEI. Implementing digital devices to maintain family connections during the COVID-19 pandemic: Experience of a large academic urban hospital
The COVID-19 pandemic lockdown imposed drastic measures at hospitals internationally to rapidly pivot their approaches to patient care. Early on when the pandemic was declared, hospitals responded to local public health restrictions by limiting all non-essential visits for their patients. Digital devices allowed Canadians to remain connected with their friends and families during the imposed isolation restrictions. The aim of this clinical perspective is to share the experience with the immediate implementation of digital connections for patients by exploring the impact as well as to describe key learnings from the initiat...

Using ChatGPT and other forms of generative AI in systematic reviews: Challenges and opportunities
ChatGPT and other large language models (LLMs) have become popular topics discussed across different frontiers of society, including healthcare [1]. These new types of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are collectively known as “Generative AI” and can produce text documents, images, audio, and video files mimicking human-like content creation abilities [2]. Generative AI has demonstrated high performance in complex tasks and competitive exams like the United States Medical Licensing Examination [3]. A retrospective comparison of setup accuracy from CBCT and SGRT data in breast cancer patients
Both cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and surface-guided radiotherapy (SGRT) are used for breast patient positioning verification before treatment delivery. SGRT may reduce treatment time and imaging dose by potentially reduce the number of CBCT needed. The aim of this study was to compare the displacements resulting in positioning from the Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) 3D and SGRT methods and to design a clinical workflow for SGRT implementation in breast radiotherapy to establish an imaging strategy based on the data obtained. Drawing on lessons learnt in allied health & medicine: Exploring pain science in radiography practice
Pain represents one of the biggest challenges to health globally. Both acute and chronic pain are among the most common reasons why people seek medical care: either to receive an investigation and diagnosis to explain it, or to seek an alleviation of pain itself where it interferes with quality of life, functional capacity, and overall well-being [1]. Musculoskeletal pain makes up many of these presentations, with chronic back pain and arthritis representing up to one-fifth of all GP consultations in Australia [2]. Guidelines for ventilation/perfusion (V/P SPECT) in pulmonary embolism
In this issue of JMIRS, we are introducing a new feature of interest to the imaging community, the publication of guidelines endorsed by the Canadian Association of Nuclear Medicine (CANM), beginning with Guidelines for Ventilation/Perfusion (V/P SPECT) in Pulmonary Embolism, which were originally approved by the CANM in November 2018. These are among several CANM guidelines that have been shared with the CANM membership but not previously published in indexed medical journals, thereby limiting their visibility and reach, a shortcoming this initiative is meant to address. Phantom study investigating the repeatability of radiomic features with alteration of image acquisition parameters in magnetic resonance imaging
Radiomics is the high throughput analysis of medical imaging data using computer algorithms, which produces thousands of quantifiable features [1,2]. These features have been shown to correlate with underlying pathological and genetic findings [1,2]. In recent years there has been an exponential increase in the number of articles and studies produced within the field of radiomics. Its potential to provide imaging biomarkers to enable personalised medicine has been acknowledged. However, as a field, radiomics is not without its limitations. The radiology department as a sentinel in fall prevention among Filipino older adult patients
Accidental falls are a serious yet underreported form of adverse event in hospitals. Falls account for the leading cause of injury and mortality among older adults. The World Health Organization (WHO) in 2021 reported that an estimated 64,000 individuals die annually from falls globally. In the Philippines, about 53.6% of older Filipinos are experiencing falls from a small population-specific setting and they are more likely to experience functional declines than the younger population. The radiology departments and radiologic technologists (RTs) play a vital role in preventing accidental falls among Filipino older adult p...

Queering Cancer: Developing a resource to support sexual and gender diverse people affected by cancer
Cancer affects everyone; there are about 80,000 cancer deaths every year in Canada. However, depending on our backgrounds, identities, and circumstances, how we experience cancer will vary. According to the 2018 census, Canada is home to approximately one million sexual and gender diverse (SGD) people (including, but not limited to, those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, and two-spirit). These SGD people account for 4% of the total population [1]. SGD people may encounter discrimination when accessing healthcare and often engage with healthcare professionals lacking education about their needs [2]. (So...
