Measuring college belongingness: Structure and measurement of the Sense of Social Fit Scale.
Journal of Counseling Psychology, Vol 70(4), Jul 2023, 424-435; doi:10.1037/cou0000668Sense of belonging is theorized to be a fundamental human need and has been shown to have important implications in many domains of life, including academic achievement. The Sense of Social Fit scale (SSF; Walton & Cohen, 2007) is widely used to assess college belongingness, particularly to study differences in academic experiences along lines of gender and race. Despite its wide use, the instrument’s latent factor structure and measurement invariance properties have not been reported in the published literature to date. Consequently, r...

Psychotherapy outcomes with Latinx clients attending Hispanic-serving institutions and predominantly White institutions.
We examined the hypothesis that Latinx clients in HSIs, compared to Latinx clients in PWIs, would experience greater relief in symptoms of depression, generalized anxiety, and academic distress over the course of psychotherapy. Results of multilevel modeling offered partial support for our hypothesis. Compared to their counterparts in PWIs, Latinx clients in HSIs were found to experience significantly greater relief in academic distress over the course of psychotherapy, but there were no significant differences between Latinx clients in HSIs and PWIs in terms of changes in depression or generalized anxiety over time. We of...

Understanding systemic racism: Anti-Blackness, white supremacy, racial capitalism, and the re/creation of white space and time.
Journal of Counseling Psychology, Vol 70(3), Apr 2023, 244-257; doi:10.1037/cou0000605In this article, the authors explain systemic racism through a racial–spatial framework wherein anti-Blackness, white supremacy, and racial capitalism interlock to create and recreate white space and time. Through the creation of private property, institutional inequities become embedded and structured for the benefit of white people. The framework provides a way to conceptualize how our geographies are racialized and how time is often used against Black and non-Black people of Color. In contrast to white experiences of feeling “in-pl...

Dismantling and eradicating anti-Blackness and systemic racism.
Journal of Counseling Psychology, Vol 70(3), Apr 2023, 235-243; doi:10.1037/cou0000660Anti-Blackness and systemic racism are long-standing pressing social issues that have received increasing attention in the counseling psychology literature. However, the past few years have demonstrated what can only be described as an emboldening of anti-Blackness—the brutal individual and systemic threats of emotional and physical violence and loss of life that Black individuals and communities face on a daily basis—and a harsh reminder of the systemic racism that continues to threaten the well-being of Black, Indigenous, and People...

Gratitude and psychological distress among first-year college students: The mediating roles of perceived social support and support provision.
Journal of Counseling Psychology, Vol 70(4), Jul 2023, 415-423; doi:10.1037/cou0000665Universities and colleges in the United States implemented remote learning and restrictions on in-person social events during the Fall 2020 academic semester. These changes and restrictions, in addition to the other numerous negative impacts of COVID-19, can exacerbate the already stressful transition from high school to college. This transition is a key developmental period during which the complexity of interpersonal relationships and the risk of internalizing symptoms such as anxiety and depression increase. As such, the present study ...

A preliminary examination of therapist hope as a predictor of clients’ distress over treatment.
Journal of Counseling Psychology, Vol 70(4), Jul 2023, 388-395; doi:10.1037/cou0000664Therapist and client hope have both been conceptualized and empirically examined as factors that contribute to the reduction of clients’ distress in treatment. That is, clients may come to therapy demoralized and without hope per Frank and Frank’s contextual model of psychotherapy. Therapy can serve to increase their hope and thereby contribute to the reduction of distress; however, therapists also bring their own individual hope to the therapeutic process. Despite both parties contributing their hope as treatment factors, no research...

Affirming and nonaffirming religious beliefs predicting depression and suicide risk among Latter-Day Saint sexual minorities.
Journal of Counseling Psychology, Vol 70(3), Apr 2023, 293-306; doi:10.1037/cou0000659Sexual minorities (SMs) who are current/former members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDSs) report high levels of depression and risk for suicide. Recent research has suggested that specific LDS religious beliefs may be related to these negative mental health outcomes. Using two independent online samples of current/former LDS SMs (Sample 1 = 403; Sample 2 = 545), we tested associations of affirming/nonaffirming LDS beliefs with depression and suicide risk cross-sectionally (Sample 1), and then longitudinally (Sample ...

The development of a Brief Working Alliance Inventory for clients and therapists using multilevel factor analysis and item response theory in the United States and China.
This study aimed to investigate the multilevel factor structure of the therapist and client versions of the 12-item Working Alliance Inventory–Short Revised (WAI; Hatcher & Gillaspy, 2006) in the United States and China, and to create a three-item brief version (WAI-B3) using multilevel factor analysis (M-FA) and multilevel item response theory (M-IRT). We gathered eight data sets from two samples each in United States and China with a total of 21,623 sessions from 376 therapists and 2,455 clients. M-FA results with the first four data sets (two American and two Chinese) suggested that the 12-item WAI across therapist an...

Beyond the individual: Sexual minority help-seeking and the consequences of structural barriers.
Journal of Counseling Psychology, Vol 70(2), Mar 2023, 133-145; doi:10.1037/cou0000657Sexual minorities report more psychological distress, unmet mental health needs, and barriers to mental health care compared with heterosexuals, yet little is known about their barriers to seeking out mental health care. The present study reports the factors that influence intentions to seek out mental health care of a national survey of 398 sexual minorities. Structural equation modeling identified structural barriers, such as cost, time, and knowing how to access services, as the strongest predictor of sexual minorities’ help-seeking ...

Internalizing and externalizing problems in adolescents following an earthquake: Codevelopment and temporal association.
Journal of Counseling Psychology, Vol 70(2), Mar 2023, 223-233; doi:10.1037/cou0000656Chinese adolescents who experience potentially traumatic events may develop posttraumatic internalizing and externalizing problems. However, it remains controversial whether interventions should focus first on internalizing or externalizing problems (or simultaneously on both). Previous studies have attempted to elucidate the developmental trajectories of posttraumatic internalizing and externalizing problems, temporal associations between them, and the between-person effects on this association to identify appropriate primary interventio...

Meta-analysis of the relationship between self-critical perfectionism and depressive symptoms: Comparison between Asian American and Asian international college students.
Journal of Counseling Psychology, Vol 70(2), Mar 2023, 203-211; doi:10.1037/cou0000653A body of research has been dedicated to demonstrating the relationship of perfectionism with a range of mental health indicators. Self-critical perfectionism, a component of perfectionism, has been framed primarily in a negative light within the mental health context. Given that research informs educational and clinical practices, it is important to explore the degree to which such findings generalize across cultures and subcultures. The current meta-analytic research systemically collated studies conducted with Asian college students wi...
