Does Childhood Trauma Predict Impulsive Spending in Later Life? An Analysis of the Mediating Roles of Impulsivity and Emotion Regulation
This study used a cross-sectional, correlational design including 189 adult participants who completed an online survey assessing childhood trauma, adverse childhood experiences, impulsive spending, impulsivity, and emotion dysregulation. Greater adverse childhood experiences and childhood trauma were positively correlated with impulsive spending, as well as general impulsivity and emotion dysregulation. Mediation analyses indicated that emotion dysregulation and greater impulsivity accounted for the positive relationship between childhood trauma and impulse spending. Adverse childhood experiences and childhood trauma are ...

Life Satisfaction among Unaccompanied Refugee Minors: Associations with Traumatic Events and Daily Hassles
AbstractWhile there is a growing literature about mental health problems among unaccompanied asylum-seeking and refugee minors (URMs), far less is known about their wellbeing. Such information is important as a subjective sense of wellbeing is associated with a variety of positive health and psychosocial outcomes. The aim of this study was to examine life satisfaction and the association with traumatic events, daily hassles, and asylum status among URMs in Norway.  We collected self-report questionnaire data from URMs living in Norway (n = 173, 90.80% male, 71.1% from Afghanistan). Mean age was 16.62 (SD = 1.74) y...

Parental and Adolescents ’ Anxiety during the COVID-19 Outbreak in Rural China: The role of Parent-child Communication
ConclusionsDuring the COVID-19 epidemic, parents ’ anxiety was related to adolescents’ anxiety. In addition, parent-child communication plays a moderating role in the above relationship. These findings emphasize the importance of implementing more psycho-education programs that specifically target parents’ emotion regulation and effective co mmunication abilities to ameliorate the psychopathological symptoms of parents and their children. Childhood Adversity and Adult Inflammation: Exploring the Mediating Role of Emotion Regulation in the MIDUS II Study
We examined the indirect effects of various types of adversity (e.g., stressful events, maltreatment, threat, and deprivation) on inflammation via two emotion regulation strategies (i.e., expressive suppression and reappraisal). Participants included 1096 adults without a history of cancer or HIV/AIDS who had completed the initial MIDUS II follow up and a sub-study examining biomarkers. Participants completed self-report measures inquiring about psychosocial factors including stressful life events, childhood trauma, and emotion regulation as well as provided blood samples. Bivariate correlation indicated that multiple form...

The Risk for Readmission to Juvenile Detention: The Role of Trauma Exposure and Trauma-related Mental Health Disorders
This study utilized the screening results of 1282 youth who were voluntarily screened for PTSD, depressive symptoms and substance use during their initial intake to d etention. More than half of the sample was readmitted during the three-year study period, with readmissions most likely to occur within one year of release. Returning to detention within one year was also associated with increased risk for multiple readmissions. Youth readmitted to detention were mo re likely to have a history of sexual abuse and problematic substance use. No other significant relationships were found between risk for readmission and trauma-r...

Filial Trauma: The Experience of Adoptive Parents of Children with Complex Behavioral and Relational Problems
AbstractChildren adopted from out-of-home care may present symptoms of developmental trauma that affect their functioning. This puts their adoptive parents at risk of experiencing secondary trauma. The purpose of this research was to understand the experience of adoptive parents who self-report symptoms of secondary trauma in relation to their child ’s symptoms of developmental trauma. Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted, transcribed, and analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s (Qualitative Research in Psychology, 3(2), 77 –101,2006) thematic analysis method. Ten adoptive parents were recruited from four ...

A Latent Class Analysis of Adverse Life Events for Kenyan Adolescents
AbstractExtant evidence indicates that exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACE) tend to cluster among children and adolescents. Considering that adolescents from African countries present higher risk of being exposed to multiple ACE compared to other countries, the identification of victimization profiles in this population is clearly warranted. The aim of this study was to determine meaningful clusters of individuals with similar experiences of ACE in a sample of Kenyan adolescents. Latent class analysis (LCA) was conducted to identify latent classes of exposure to ACE. In addition, the relationships between the la...

Seeking an Integrated Approach to Trauma and Problematic Sexual Behaviors in Adolescents: Learning from Practitioners
AbstractMore than a third of all sexual crimes are committed by adolescents. In addition, many adolescents struggle with problematic sexual behaviors (PSB) that may not rise to a criminal offense, but cause harm to themselves and those around them. A significant number of these adolescents also have histories of their own trauma; yet there are no treatment models that integrate both PSB and trauma into one comprehensive treatment for this population. This qualitative study ’s aim was to use the expertise of clinicians who work with adolescents with PSB as well as clients and their caregivers who had completed PSB treatme...

Examining Parental Abilities to Recognize Sexual Grooming Behaviors of Child Sexual Abusers
Conclusion: Regardless of parental status, the sample did not strongly associate sexual grooming behaviors with CSA perpetration except when behaviors related to sexual content and physical touch were presented. This suggests heightened associations of more overt sexual grooming behaviors with CSA. The discrepancy found between confidence and recognition abilities calls for targeted educational efforts to increase awareness i n types of behaviors that may be indicative of abuse. Profiles of Posttraumatic Growth and Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms in Childhood Cancer Survivors
AbstractThe experience of childhood cancer (CC) could be a traumatic event that produces long-term emotional responses such as posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and posttraumatic growth (PTG) in survivors. The relationship between both PTSS and PTG is not clear in CC survivors. Assessing challenges to core beliefs and rumination could give information regarding the different paths that lead to traumatic responses. Thus, this study aims to identify childhood cancer survivors ’ profiles from PTSS and PTG measures and to examine the pathways of relationships between PTSS and PTG, rumination, and challenge to core belief....

The Mediating Role of Sleep Quality, Regularity, and Insomnia on the Relationship Between Adverse Childhood Experiences and Resilience
AbstractAdverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been linked to many negative outcomes in prior psychological literature. Previous studies have shown that ACEs are related to sleep problems (e.g., trouble falling and staying asleep) and sleep problems are related to resilience outcomes. However, there are far fewer studies that examine whether sleep quality, regularity, and insomnia symptoms mediate the relationship between ACEs and resilience. Therefore, the purpose of the current study was to analyze the mediating role of sleep problems on the relationship between ACEs and resilience. Emerging adult participants between...
