Trauma in Context: an Integrative Treatment Model
AbstractEvidenced based trauma treatments benefit children, but they rarely suffice for youth with multiple and complex comorbidities. After the completion of standard treatments, many children continue to show residual social, behavioral, and emotional difficulties. Part of the difficulty is that while the literature on trauma describes numerous facets that contribute to the severity, expression, and outcomes of trauma exposure, clinical assessments and interventions do not sufficiently reflect that literature. Clinicians thus have little guidance on how to integrate the intricacies of client ’s circumstances into a tra...

Moral Injury in Former Child Soldiers in Liberia
This study examined the risk of MI in former child soldiers in Liberia and tested whether age and history of abduction moderate the relationship between perpetrating violence and MI based on a sample of 459 former child soldiers. Results from regression analysis confirmed that perpetrators had a higher risk of MI. However, while younger perpetrators were more vulnerable to MI, abduction history had no statistically significant moderation effect on the risk of MI. Further analysis also revealed that the moderation effects are primarily on anxiety, avoidance and negative feelings but not re-experiencing. These findings sugge...

The Mental Health Consequences of Hurricane Matthew on Haitian Children and Youth: An Exploratory Study
AbstractHaiti has experienced many major natural disasters in the past decade that included Hurricane Matthew which led to mass damage to property, a depletion of basic resources, human fatalities and injuries, and mental health consequences that affected the poorest. The current study focused on the psychological effects of Hurricane Matthew on Haitian children and adolescents. Children display heightened depression, and PTSD symptoms in the aftermath of disasters (Hausman et al., Journal of Family Psychology 34:836 –845,2020), however, the researchers anticipated that children living in orphanages would display more se...

The Role of Children's PTSD Symptomatology in Non-Offending Caregivers' Secondary Traumatic Stress Symptomatology Following Disclosures of Sexual or Physical Abuse
Abstract This research examined factors influencing levels of secondary traumatic stress (STS) in non-offending caregivers (NOCs) of children with histories of sexual or physical abuse. These factors included the nature of the abuse, NOCs ’ relationships with the initiators of the abuse, children’s ages and genders, NOCs’ trauma histories, and the elapsed time between children’s disclosures of abuse and their trauma assessments. As a secondary objective, this research examined the interactions between children’s self-report s of their own posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptomatology, NOCs’ estimates o...

Embitterment – Conception of a Potential Moderator to Dysfunctional and Aggressive Behaviour in Children and Adolescents
AbstractEmbitterment is an emotion which is known to everybody in reaction to injustice, humiliation, and breach of trust. Children and adolescents have an understanding of justice/injustice and fairness, violations of injustice, humiliation, and breach of trust are also stressors at a young age. In this conceptual paper it is argued that embitterment is also seen in children and adolescents, and that parents, educators and therapists should recognize this emotion. This could possibly help to early identify children at risk for severe dysfunctional and aggressive behaviours, when preventive interventions are still possible...

Acceptability, Feasibility, and Preliminary Effectiveness of Group Cognitive Processing Therapy with Female Adolescent Survivors of Commercial Sexual Exploitation in Cambodia
AbstractResearch supports the efficacy of cognitive processing therapy (CPT) for reducing Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and comorbid conditions among survivors of sexual assault and other traumas. To date, there are no known studies using CPT with adolescents exposed to commercial sexual exploitation (CSE). The pilot study implemented a modified version of group CPT to determine the preliminary acceptability and feasibility of this intervention with adolescents who experienced CSE. Thirteen participants living in a residential treatment facility in Cambodia received 10 sessions of modified group CPT. Participants we...

Relationship Between Cumulative Adverse Childhood Experiences and Myocardial Infarction  in Adulthood: a Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
AbstractThe aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to estimate the relationship between cumulative adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and myocardial infarction (MI) in adulthood and to examine the role of potential confounding factors that may have contributed to the association. Studies examining the association of cumulative ACEs with MI among adults were identified by searching PubMed/MEDLINE, PsycINFO, ScienceDirect, and ProQuest Dissertations and Thesis. Individual estimates of odds ratios were pooled using random effects meta-analysis. Articles were pooled separately according to whether findings were ...

A Pilot Study Testing Intranasal Ketamine for the Treatment of Procedural Anxiety in Children Undergoing Laceration Repair
AbstractIdentifying non-invasive methods for anxiolysis is becoming increasingly important in the pediatric emergency department (ED). Few studies have examined the use of intranasal (IN) ketamine for procedural anxiolysis. We aim to evaluate if IN ketamine provides satisfactory anxiolysis for patients undergoing laceration repair based on anxiety and sedation scoring. We also evaluated the feasibility of using IN ketamine in future trials based on its tolerability and side-effects. A pilot study evaluating IN ketamine in the treatment of procedural anxiety for patients, 2  years and older, weighing 40 kg or less, presen...

The Relationship Between Spirituality and Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms in Syrian Adolescents in Jordan
AbstractThe civil war in Syria began in 2011 and escalated over years resulting in one of the largest humanitarian crises since the Second World War. Injury, loss, poverty, and immigration trapped the Syrian population in a diversity of psychological disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Spirituality has, on the other hand, been consistently reported as a resilient factor against developing mental disorders. Hence, spirituality or religiosity have been incorporated in clinical and psychotherapeutic practice for several mental disorders. We explored the association between spirituality and the developm...

A Systematic Review of the Effect of Parental Adverse Childhood Experiences on Parenting and Child Psychopathology
AbstractAdverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are defined as early exposure to maltreatment and household dysfunction. Researchers have demonstrated the link between ACEs and negative psychological, behavioral, interpersonal, and health outcomes. A growing area of interest in the ACE literature concerns the relationship between ACEs, parenting, and child psychopathology due to the intergenerational effect of ACEs. Emotional availability and discipline strategies are two domains of parenting that can increase understanding of the associations between ACEs, parenting, and child psychopathology from an attachment framework bec...
