The Prevalence of Adverse Childhood Experiences Among Children and Adolescents Who Display Harmful Sexual Behaviour: A Review of the Existing Research
This study addresses this gap to further our understanding of the aetiology of HSB among children and adolescents. The full text of 87 articles was retrieved and assessed for eligibility, following which 10 articles were deemed relevant for inclusion in the review. These 10 studies were then subjected to quality assessment, data extraction and synthesis. The present review included only studies that used data pertaining to both males and females, and some studies provided a comparison between males and females. There were higher rates of sexual victimisation among females who display HSB. Additionally, child sexual abuse p...

An Exploratory Investigation of Childhood Sexual Abuse and Other Theory-Driven Predictors of Sex Work Among Women with and without Childhood ADHD
Conclusions: Findings from this exploratory study underscore the need for longitudinal research that (a) considers the developmental timing of CSA and (b) accounts for imp ulsivity and inattention as risk factors for sex work among young-adult women. Implications for clinical practice are briefly discussed. (Source: Journal of Child and Adolescent Trauma)

Exploring the Relationship Between Modifiable Protective Factors and Mental Health Issues Among Children Experiencing Adverse Childhood Experiences Using a Resilience Framework
AbstractThe purpose of this study was to examine whether the National Scientific Council on the Developing Child (NSCDC) resilience framework statistically predicted whether a child with 4 or more adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) ever had a mental health issue. The study also explored which NSCDC modifiable resilience factors had the strongest relationship with mental health issues among children with 4 or more ACEs. Utilizing the 2019 National Survey of Children ’s Health, secondary data analysis was conducted using a sample of 1,225 children between 6 and 17 years old that had experienced 4 or more ACEs. Logistic ...

Safe Neighborhoods and Supportive Communities Protect Children from the Health Effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)
This study underscores the importance of community-level prevention and intervention efforts to mitigate the health effects of ACEs. Public health efforts seeking to prevent poor health outcomes should consider the socio-environmental influences on health behaviors across the lifespan and continue to address the varying needs of historically disadvantaged populations. The brain at rest: Exploratory Neurophysiological Findings Among Men With Histories of Childhood Sexual Abuse
ConclusionsThese findings demonstrate that intrinsic neurophysiological differences in limbic, salience and default mode network connectivity are apparent even during a resting state between the groups of participants. This is preliminary evidence of long-term neurophysiological effects of CSA in men with PTSD, and even in those without. Importantly, these findings can validate the lived experiences of males with CSA histories and guide researchers and clinicians to potential avenues to support their well-being. Resilience in Deafness, Adolescence and Gender
AbstractDeaf and hearing Adolescents are facing the adversity of life like social expectations, academic and economic demands. The purpose of this study was to describe deaf and female adolescents' resilience with their respective counterparts using the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC-25). Methods: The study was conducted on 160 adolescent (80 deaf [40 female] and 80hearing [40 female]) students who were selected based on multistage sampling. Quantitative and qualitative data collections were made through the questionnaire as well as interview. The study employed Mean, Standard Deviation, independent t-test, and ...

Mu Opioid Receptor Dynamics in Healthy Volunteers with a History of Childhood Maltreatment
AbstractEvidence suggests that adults with a history of childhood maltreatment, the experience of emotional or physical neglect and/or abuse within the family during childhood, have blunted reward and stress processing, and higher risk of depression. The mu opioid receptor rich nucleus accumbens and amygdala are critical to reward and stress processing respectively. We hypothesized that nucleus accumbens and amygdala mu opioid receptor densities and activity (change in receptor binding due to endogenous opioid release or receptor conformation change) were negatively associated with childhood maltreatment in healthy young a...

An Investigation of Secondary Traumatic Stress and Trauma-informed Care Utilization in School Personnel
This study provides evidence that increased use of trauma-informed care practices can positively impact the STS levels of school personnel, though special attentio n should be paid to those with high levels of intrusion or arousal. (Source: Journal of Child and Adolescent Trauma)

Risk Factors for Sexual Revictimization and Dating Violence in Young Adults with a History of Child Sexual Abuse
This study examined how childhood maltreatment, sociodemographic characteristics, mental health, relational factors, and community factors are associated with 1) sexual revictimization 2) psychological dating violence victimization, and 3) physical dating violence victimization in a sample of young adults reporting a history of CSA. A sample of 190 young adults (18 –25 y.o.) with self-reported experiences of CSA completed an online survey measuring childhood maltreatment (e.g. neglect, physical abuse, witness to domestic violence), sociodemographic characteristics (e.g. material deprivation, education), mental health (di...

The S.I.T.E. Framework: A Novel Approach for Sustainably Integrating Trauma-Informed Approaches in Schools
AbstractStudents who present as dysregulated due to the impacts of trauma and toxic stress can challenge educators and find themselves improperly or insufficiently supported, punitively consequenced and unable to equitably access education. Trauma-informed approaches based on an understanding of brain development and function have been put forth as best practice for supporting students with trauma histories. The novelSustainablyIntegratedTrauma-InformedEducation Framework (S.I.T.E. Framework) facilitates systemic integration of trauma-informed approaches across a school and was developed through a community-informed proces...

Child psychological/emotional abuse and neglect: A definitional conceptual framework
ConclusionsPolicy, practice, and research on PEA (and other forms of child abuse and neglect) are unlikely to progress without clarity about the definitions being used (in terms of their conceptual components) and the rationale for using the specific definitions chosen. The framework provided by the study is an effective tool for describing the components used in PEA definitions and thus distinguishing the differences between definitions. The framework should also be applicable for other types of child abuse and neglect. (Source: Journal of Child and Adolescent Trauma)

Comparative Performance of the Resilience Inventory (IRES) and Resilience Scale-14 (RS-14) Spanish Versions Among Postpartum Adolescent Mothers
We examined reliability using Cronbach ’s alpha. We used exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to assess the construct validity and factor structures of the two scales. Both scales had good internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha >  0.7). Correlation between IRES and RS-14 scores was fair (r = 0.53). The EFA results of both scales yielded a three-factor structure. EFA including all items from IRES and RS-14 yielded a six-factor structure. CFA results corroborated the original seven-factor structure for IRES and yielded measures indicating a good level of goodness of fit (com...
