Longitudinal Effects from Childhood Abuse to Bullying Perpetration in Adolescence: The Role of Mental Health and Social Problems
Abstract Bullying has attracted increased attention due to the serious implications for perpetrators, victims, and schools. Recent studies have sought to identify factors that may contribute to bullying perpetration, and child abuse has been identified as one such factor. The mediating processes linking child abuse to bullying perpetration, however, are not well understood. The current study explored adolescent mental health problems, including symptoms of depression, anxiety, dissociation, and posttraumatic stress disorder, and poor social skills as pathways between childhood abuse and adolescent bullying perpetration....

A Systematic Review of the Education and Awareness Interventions to Prevent Online Child Sexual Abuse
AbstractOnline child sexual abuse is highly prevalent in current society, in part, due to how technologically advanced children and adults have become. While much of the focus has been on perpetrator intervention, it is prudent to consider responses safeguarding children from potential perpetrators. Therefore, this review aimed to identify all the available empirical research on the prevention methods linked to education and awareness to determine the approaches' effectiveness, successes, and failures to aid future interventions. Databases were systematically searched for studies published between 2000 to 2020. Nine studie...

Behavioral and Biological Indicators of Risk and Well-Being in a Sample of South African Youth
AbstractSelf report measures have been widely used in research to illustrate high rates of exposure to violence among youth in trauma-saturated regions, such as Cape Town, South Africa. To better understand the risk and resilience factors of youth who have been exposed to, witnessed, or directly experienced violence, the current study used a multi-method assessment in a naturalistic setting that included heart rate variability (an index of regulatory flexibility and cardiovascular health), a computerized risk-taking task, and self report measures. Youth (N = 83) from Cape Town, South Africa, participated in a psychobiologi...

Developmental Manifestations of Grief in Children and Adolescents: Caregivers as Key Grief Facilitators
AbstractThe death of a loved one represents one of the most distressing and potentially traumatic life events in childhood and adolescence. Grief reactions in youth are influenced by ongoing developmental processes and manifest differently depending on the child ’s age and developmental stage. These grief-related processes unfold within youths’ caregiving context, as children and adolescents rely heavily on the adults in their environment to navigate and cope with the death of a loved one. Despite the field’s increasing recognition of the potential fo r maladaptive grief reactions to impede functioning over time, few...

Health Care Providers ’ Perspectives on COVID-19 and Medical Neglect in Children with Life-Threatening Complex Chronic Conditions
ConclusionsThe COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the fragility of the medical and social systems that supports families of children with LT-CCCs. These findings are consistent with previous literature that suggest that the COVID-19 pandemic has increased the risk for child maltreatment. It additionally highlights the vulnerability of this patient population. (Source: Journal of Child and Adolescent Trauma)

Association Between Adverse Childhood Experiences, Resilience and Mental Health in a Hispanic Community
This study explores the relations between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), mental health and resilience among Hispanic adults living in the United States – Mexico Border region. Examining the Pathologic Adaptation Model of Community Violence Exposure in Justice Involved Adolescents: the Moderating and Mediating Effects of Moral Disengagement
AbstractAccording to the pathologic adaptation model (Ng-Mak et al. inThe American Journal of Orthopsychiatry,72, 92 –101,2002), youth who experience community violence exposure may become desensitized to these experiences. Moral disengagement, which refers to changing one ’s moral or ethical standards to justify engaging in destructive or harmful behavior, has been proposed as a construct to explain the relation between community violence exposure and desensitization (Bandura et al.,1996). The purpose of the current study was to test the pathologic adaptation model of community violence exposure and examine the role o...

An Examination of the Components of Toxic Stress in Childhood and Biological Markers of Physical Health in Emerging Adulthood
AbstractExperiencing severe and enduring adversity in childhood without the support of adult figures has been linked to an extensive list of physical health outcomes. This finding is closely tied to the concept of toxic stress, which is regularly studied using a combination of sources, including childhood adversity, unmet basic needs, and unmet social needs. Despite these findings, previous work has typically compiled various sources associated with toxic stress into a single construct, limiting existing knowledge on the contribution of each individual source to physical health. To address these concerns, the current study...

The Secondary Harms of Parental Substance Use on Children ’s Educational Outcomes: A Review
AbstractParental substance use, that is alcohol and illicit drugs, can have  a deleterious impact on child health and wellbeing. An area that can be affected by parental substance use is the educational outcomes of children. Current reviews of the literature in the field of parental substance use and children's educational outcomes have only identified a small number of studies, and most focus on children's educational attainment. To grasp the available literature, the method from Arksey and O’Malley (2005) was used to identify literature. Studies were included if they were empirical, after 1950, and focused on chi...
