Design of the PERSEO Registry on the management of patients treated with oral anticoagulants and coronary stent
Conclusion The PERSEO Registry will investigate in a ‘real world’ setting the safety and efficacy of DOAC versus warfarin and dual versus triple antithrombotic therapy in patients with indication for oral anticoagulant therapy who undergo PCI-S. (Source: Journal of Cardiovascular Medicine)

Inflammation and heart failure: a two-sample Mendelian randomization study
Conclusion This Mendelian randomization study could not determine a causal relationship between inflammation and risk of heart failure. However, some biomarkers suffered from weak instrument bias. (Source: Journal of Cardiovascular Medicine)

A 20-year experience in cardiac tumors: a single center surgical experience and a review of literature
Conclusion Cardiac tumors require a multidisciplinary approach to guarantee a prompt diagnosis and appropriate treatment. In our surgical experience, outcome after surgery of benign tumors was excellent, while malignant tumors had poor prognosis despite radical surgery. (Source: Journal of Cardiovascular Medicine)

Impact of posterior pericardial drain and risk factors on late pericardial effusion after coronary artery bypass surgery
Background The blood retained in posterior pericardium can trigger an inflammatory response that increases postoperative atrial fibrillations (POAFs), and it can complicate postoperative course. We retrospectively investigated the impact of a posterior pericardial drain (PPD) in reducing late postoperative pericardial effusion (pPE) and POAFs during the first 30 postoperative days. Methods Two hundred and fifty coronary artery bypass grafting patients were divided into two groups according to the presence of a PPD in addition to the anterior one. Perioperative data and the incidence of POAF were compared. Risk f...

Mitral valve stenosis in the current era: a changing landscape
Mitral stenosis results from haemodynamic obstruction at the mitral valve level because of structural abnormalities of the valve apparatus, leading to increased resistance to the transmitral flow. Although rheumatic fever remains the predominant cause of mitral stenosis worldwide, other causes are increasingly relevant in the developed countries with degenerative mitral stenosis (DMS) because of mitral annulus calcification (MAC) becoming growingly prevalent in industrialized countries with higher life expectancy. Rheumatic mitral stenosis (RMS) and DMS display dramatic differences in pathophysiology, prognosis, and diseas...
