Efficacy of ticagrelor compared to clopidogrel in improving endothelial function in patients with coronary artery disease: a systematic review
Background Ticagrelor and clopidogrel are antiplatelet drugs that act by binding to the adenosine diphosphate P2Y12 receptor. Previous studies have compared between them regarding the endothelial function effect. Objectives This systematic review aims to summarize the evidence comparing the efficacy of ticagrelor vs. clopidogrel in improving endothelial function in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). Methods In August 2021, the Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane library were searched systematically for eligible trials. We included randomized controlled trials that compared the efficacy ...

Role of computed tomography in transcatheter replacement of ‘other valves’: a comprehensive review of preprocedural imaging
Transcatheter procedures for heart valve repair or replacement represent a valid alternative for treating patients who are inoperable or at a high risk for open-heart surgery. The transcatheter approach has become predominant over surgical intervention for aortic valve disease, but it is also increasingly utilized for diseases of the ‘other valves’, that is the mitral and, to a lesser extent, tricuspid and pulmonary valve. Preprocedural imaging is essential for planning the transcatheter intervention and computed tomography has become the main imaging modality by providing information that can guide the type of treatme...

Acute pericarditis in patients receiving coronavirus disease 2019 vaccines: a case series from the community
Conclusion This case series shows a higher incidence of acute pericarditis in patients administered with COVID-19 vaccines than previously estimated, probably because of a more comprehensive assessment of clinical as well as echocardiographic parameters. (Source: Journal of Cardiovascular Medicine)

Impact of coronavirus disease 19 outbreak on arrhythmic events and mortality among implantable cardioverter defibrillator patients followed up by remote monitoring: a single center study from the Veneto region of Italy
Conclusions We did not observe an increase in a combined end point including arrhythmic events and mortality in ICD carriers who were remotely monitored in 2020, compared to 2019, despite the negative impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 outbreak on the healthcare system. Preexisting coronary artery disease among coronavirus disease 2019 patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Aims The prevalence and prognostic implications of coronary artery disease (CAD) in patients infected by the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) disease remain unclear. Methods We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the prevalence and mortality risk in COVID-19 patients with preexisting CAD. We searched Medline and Scopus to locate all articles published up to December 8, 2021, reporting data of COVID-19 survivors and nonsurvivors with preexisting CAD. Data were pooled using the Mantel-Haenszel random effects models with odds ratio (OR) as the effect measure with the related 95% confiden...

Modified Haller index is inversely correlated with true positive exercise stress echocardiographic results
Conclusions Subjects with MHI>2.5 have low prevalence of TP ESE, regardless of PTP. Preliminary MHI assessment may reduce overestimation of PTP of CAD. (Source: Journal of Cardiovascular Medicine)

Outcome after surgical embolectomy for acute pulmonary embolism
Conclusion Surgical pulmonary embolectomy resulted in survival of the majority of patients with PE and contraindications for or failed thrombolysis. Given the excessive mortality when left untreated, an operative approach should become a routine part of discussions concerning alternative treatment options for these patients. Elective aortic arch surgery: cerebral perfusion flows and transient neurological dysfunctions
Conclusion The results of the study showed that lower perfusion flows seem to be related to a higher probability of developing transient neurological dysfunctions. However, the analysis of a wider population is required to confirm these preliminary data. (Source: Journal of Cardiovascular Medicine)
