Effects of intake of < em > Lactococcus cremoris < /em > subsp. < em > cremoris < /em > FC on constipation symptoms and immune system in healthy participants with mild constipation: a double-blind, placebo-controlled study
This study evaluated the effect of Lactococcus cremoris subsp. cremoris FC (FC) on constipation symptoms and the immune system in healthy participants with mild constipation. Eighty-three participants were randomised into four groups with different doses: 50, 75, and 100 mg of freeze-dried FC (test) or corn starch (placebo). Defaecation frequency significantly increased in all test groups compared to the placebo group. Stool appearance and volume were improved considerably within the groups administered 50 mg and 75 mg of FC. The abundances of total bacteria, Bifidobacterium spp., and Lactobacillus group in the faeces show...

Ellagic acid alleviates TNBS-induced intestinal barrier dysfunction by regulating mucin secretion and maintaining tight junction integrity in rats
Int J Food Sci Nutr. 2023 Jul 16:1-11. doi: 10.1080/09637486.2023.2230525. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn the present study, the mechanism of ellagic acid (EA) in alleviated ulcerative colitis (UC) was investigated. Twenty-four SD rats were randomly distributed into three treatment groups: (1) control group, (2) UC group, and (3) UC + EA group. Samples were collected for analysis after a 15-day trial period. We found that EA mitigated the colitis symptoms in TNBS-treated rats. Besides, EA decreased the expression of cytokines by inhibiting NF-κB signalling. TNBS-induced reduction in tight junction proteins was restored ...

Evaluation of eating habits by 7-day food record: web-PC vs. traditional paper format
Int J Food Sci Nutr. 2023 Jul 16:1-8. doi: 10.1080/09637486.2023.2236808. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe aim of this study was to evaluate the validity of a web-based 7-day food-record using METADIETA-web link (Meteda s.r.l.) - a professional software used in nutritional practice and research - compared with the traditional paper format. Twenty-six healthy adults of both sexes were recruited in this cross-over study based on the number coming from the sample size calculation, and randomly assigned to start with METADIETA-web or traditional 7-Day Food-Diary. All the 7-day food-diaries were recorded in the Metadieta-softw...

Public interest in weight loss and diet-related topics in Europe: an infodemiology study of Google trends data from 2004-2022
This study aimed to determine the trends of public interest in weight loss, physical activity, diet, nutrition, healthy diet, healthy nutrition, optimum nutrition, healthy food, and a combination of weight loss + diet-related topics in Europe, using Google Trends data from 2004 to 2022. Denmark was the most interested in weight loss topics, whereas Ukraine was the least interested. The mean relative search volume (RSV) of "Weight loss + Optimum nutrition" was the most frequent (80.65%), followed by "Weight loss + Physical activity" (78.66%). Association between Mediterranean lifestyle and perception of well-being and distress in a sample population of university Italian students
Int J Food Sci Nutr. 2023 Jul 10:1-12. doi: 10.1080/09637486.2023.2232129. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe investigated the extent to which adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MD) in combination with Mediterranean lifestyle factors influenced students' perceptions of subjective well-being (SWB) and distress. 939 undergraduates completed a survey to assess sociodemographic and lifestyle characteristics, including adherence to the MD, depression, anxiety, stress, and SWB. Data were analysed with correlation, logistic, and multiple linear regression models. Higher adherence to MD correlated with better SWB. Fruit, red meat,...

Associations between vegetarianism, body mass index, and eating disorders/disordered eating behaviours: a systematic review of literature
Int J Food Sci Nutr. 2023 Jul 10:1-39. doi: 10.1080/09637486.2023.2232953. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe vegetarian diet is becoming increasingly popular among the general population and has been accompanied by an increasing number of publications in the last twenty years. However, the spread of selective diets raises some questions, especially with regard to health. This review examines studies on vegetarianism published between 2000 and 2022 that investigated the associations between this diet, weight, and eating disorders. The descriptive studies conclude that vegetarians have a lower body mass index, and the interv...
