Separated serum was used for the analysisCombined Analysis of Anti SARS-CoV-2 IgG and IgM Responses in COVID19 Patients in India
AbstractCoronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus  2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a global health problem, India being the second most affected country. The kinetics of antibody response to SARS-CoV-2 in Indian population is not studied yet. To understand serological response in relation to age, gender, time period and severity of disease, Roche Elecsys anti-S ARS-CoV-2 test was used which analysed both IgM and IgG. One hundred and three COVID-19 patients were enrolled. Seropositivity was seen in 64% of patients, with 33% at ≤ 7 days, 62% between 8 and 15 days and 81% at ≥...

Emergence of Oligoclonal Bands in Association with the use of Chemotherapy and Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation
AbstractMultiple myeloma (MM) is a rare malignant condition with an abnormal clonal proliferation of plasma cells in the bone marrow. Chemotherapy and Hematopoietic Stem cell transplantation (HCT) are the main modalities of myeloablative therapy. The study aimed to determine the frequency of oligoclonal bands (OB) in multiple myeloma patients receiving primary therapy alone with chemotherapy as well as patients undergoing HCT at a single institution. The clinical and laboratory records of 76 MM patients were reviewed who underwent HCT from January 2012 to January 2019. Another 74 cases receiving chemotherapy alone, were al...

Association of MTHFR C677T (rs1801133) and A1298C (rs1801131) Polymorphisms with Serum Homocysteine, Folate and Vitamin B12 in Patients with Young Coronary Artery Disease
The objective of this study was to evaluate the clinical usefulness of association betweenMTHFR C677T (rs1801133) andA1298C (rs1801131) polymorphisms with serum homocysteine, folate and vitamin B12 in addition to conventional cardiovascular risk factors in patients with young CAD. Genomic DNA was isolated from the whole blood. Genotyping ofMTHFRC677T (rs1801133) andMTHFR A1298C (rs1801131) polymorphisms in young CAD patients and healthy controls was performed by ARMS-PCR method. Serum homocysteine, vitamin B12 and folate were estimated by CMIA and lipid profile parameters were measured by automated chemistry analyzers. Ser...

Selenium Levels in Occupationally Lead Exposed Workers of Rajasthan
AbstractOccupational and environmental exposure to Lead (Pb) has profound detrimental effects on human health. The underlying mechanism of lead toxicity is not fully understood but antioxidant imbalance is suggested to be a key player in its pathogenesis. Selenium (Se) being a vital component of antioxidant system in the body, has been linked to many health benefits in humans. Selenium levels in occupationally Pb exposed individuals has not been explored in Indian setup. The aim of the present study is to find out the association of Se with blood lead levels (BLL) in occupationally Pb exposed individuals. In the present stu...

To Study the Role of Serum Homocysteine Levels and Ocular Involvement in Retinal Vasculitis
AbstractIdiopathic retinal vasculitis is a chronic disease of unknown aetiology which results in ocular morbidity in patients of productive age group. Homocysteine has been implicated in various ocular conditions like age-related macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusions, diabetic retinopathy, and optic nerve diseases. We conducted a study to investigate the relation between serum homocysteine levels and retinal vasculitis at a tertiary care centre in North India.  In this case-control study, 32 cases and 64 controls were included and the duration was from June 2017 to March 2019. Serum homocysteine of cases and contr...

A Study of the Levels of Some Toxic Substances present in Dry Holi Colours in Kolkata, India
Abstract‘Holi’ is an Indian festival with a great cultural context, that is celebrated across the world at the onset of spring by applying dry powder of vibrant colours on friends and family. In ancient times holi colours were prepared from different spring flowers, but in modern times, these natural co lours have been replaced by commercial industrial dyes prepared by chemical processes. Even products that claim to use organic colours, use synthetic pigments to enhance the brightness of hues. Such synthetic holi colours are sold as herbal colours, in an unregulated manner, in local markets, and no checks can be enforc...

Increased Serum Levels of Matrix-metalloproteinase-9, Cyclo-oxygenase-2 and Prostaglandin E-2 in Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
In this study, we included a total of 79 COPD and 79 healthy controls. We assessed demographic profile, risk factors, respiratory symptoms, clinical history, COPD Assessment Test (CAT) score and spirometry. Further, we determined the serum levels of MMP-9, COX-2 and PGE-2 by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The correlation between their serum levels was also determined. Among the studied population age, gender, body mass index and socioeconomic status were comparable. Serum levels of MMP-9, COX-2 and PGE-2 were significantly increased in the COPD group than in healthy controls (P <  0.0001). Moreover, MMP-...

CRISPR/Cas-New Molecular Scissors in Diagnostics and Therapeutics of COVID-19
AbstractThe current pandemic of COVID-19, with its climbing number of cases and deaths, has us searching for tools for rapid, reliable, and affordable methods of detection on one hand, and novel, improved therapeutic strategies on the other. The currently employed RT-PCR method, despite its all-encompassing utility, has its shortcomings. Newer diagnostic tools, based on the Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats/Cas(CRISPR-Cas) system, with its better diagnostic accuracy measures, have come up to fill that void. These assay platforms are expected to slowly take up the place of COVID-19 diagnostics. Furth...

An Integrated Approach of the Potential Underlying Molecular Mechanistic Paradigms of SARS-CoV-2-Mediated Coagulopathy
AbstractCoronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a pandemic disease which has affected more than  6.2 million people globally, with numbers mounting considerably daily. However, till date, no specific treatment modalities are available for Covid-19 and also not much information is known about this disease. Recent studies have revealed that SARS-CoV-2 infection is associated with the generatio n of thrombosis and coagulopathy. Fundamentally, it has been believed that a diverse array of signalling pathways might be responsible for the activation of coagu...
