Relationship between the spread of COVID-19, social frailty, and depressive symptoms in patients with heart failure
AbstractIn community-dwelling older people, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been reported to be associated with the development of frailty and depressive symptoms. We aimed to investigate whether the spread of COVID-19 is associated with the development of frailty in patients with heart failure (HF). The presence of the multi-domain of frailty in 257 patients with HF was assessed at hospital discharge. The spread of COVID-19 was significantly associated with the development of social frailty and depressive symptoms. Evaluation of these symptoms during hospitalization would support disease management and understandi...

Stenting of branch pulmonary artery stenosis in children: initial experience and mid-term follow-up of the pul-stent
This study summarizes our initial experience with Pul-Stents in this patient population, including the efficacy and safety. We implanted 37 Pul-Stents in 35 patients between August 2014 and June 2015. The patients ’ mean age and weight at stent implantation were 6.7 ± 3.0 years and 20.9 ± 8.7 kg, respectively. Bench testing revealed that axial shortening of the Pul-Stent was minimal with further dilation, and the radial strength did not change. The stents were successfully deployed in all cases, except two with minor malpositioning. Primarily, 8–12 mm mounting balloons were used for the initial implantatio...

Relationship between coronary artery calcium score and bleeding events after percutaneous coronary intervention in chronic coronary syndrome
This study aimed to examine the association between CAC scores and clinical outcomes after PCI in patients with CCS. This retrospective observational study included 295 consecutive patients who underwent multidetector computer tomography and were scheduled for their first elective PCI. Patients were categorized into two groups based on the CAC scores (low:  ≤ 400 or high: >  400). The bleeding risk was evaluated using the Academic Research Consortium for High Bleeding Risk (ARC-HBR) criteria. The primary clinical outcome was a major bleeding event within 1 year after PCI, defined as Bleeding Academic Research...

Multicenter, retrospective registry of isolated atherosclerotic popliteal arteries treated with endovascular revascularization
This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of endovascular therapy (EVT) using the newer devices for IAPLs. This retrospective multicenter registry analyzed patients with lower extremity artery disease having IAPLs who underwent EVT using the newer devices between 2018 and 2021. The primary outcome was primary patency 1  year after EVT. A total of 392 consecutive patients undergoing EVT for IAPLs were enrolled. The Kaplan–Meier analysis showed that the primary patency and the freedom from target lesion revascularization were 80.9% and 87.8% 1 year after EVT, respectively. The multivariate Cox proportional hazar ds re...

Feasibility of rotational atherectomy in patients with acute coronary syndrome: favorable in-hospital outcomes and clinical importance of complexed coronary atherosclerosis
AbstractThe feasibility of rotational atherectomy (RA) during percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in patients who present with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) remains fully unsettled. We retrospectively evaluated 198 consecutive patients who underwent RA during PCI from 2009 to 2020. All patients underwent intracoronary imaging (intravascular ultrasound 96.5%, optical coherence tomography 9.1%, both 5.6%) during PCI. Patients who underwent RA during PCI were divided into two groups: ACS (n = 49; unstable angina pectoris,n = 27; non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction,n = 18, and ST-elevation myocardial infarc...

Clinical application of artificial intelligence algorithm for prediction of one-year mortality in heart failure patients
This study aimed to create a new risk prediction model for HF with a minimum number of predictor variables using MLM. We used two datasets of hospitalized HF patients: retrospective data for creating the model and prospectively registered data for model validation. Critical clinical events (CCEs) were defined as death or LV assist device implantation within 1  year from the discharge date. We randomly divided the retrospective data into training and testing datasets and created a risk prediction model based on the training dataset (MLM-risk model). The prediction model was validated using both the testing dataset and the ...

Assessment of left atrial deformation in patients with total anomalous pulmonary venous connection by two-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography
ConclusionThis study showed that nevertheless maximum volume of LA was recovered within the normal range, reduced LA strains, especially contractile function lasted from birth even after repair in Patients with TAPVC. (Source: Heart and Vessels)

Association of peak C-reactive protein with long-term clinical outcomes in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction
In conclusion, high peak CRP was significantly associated with all-cause death in patients with STEMI. Our results suggest that peak CRP may be useful to stratify patients with STEMI for the risk of future death. (Source: Heart and Vessels)

Fragmented QRS on 12-lead electrocardiogram predicts long-term prognosis in patients with cardiac sarcoidosis

Evaluation of coronary artery disease in patients undergoing atrial fibrillation ablation: a non-invasive FFR computed tomography study
AbstractTo evaluate coronary artery disease (CAD) with computed tomography coronary angiography (CTCA)-derived fractional flow reserve (FFR) in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) requiring ablation. The study population consisted of 151 patients who underwent CTCA before AF ablation (AF group), and a control group of 151 patients from the outpatient clinic who underwent CTCA without any history of AF (non-AF group), matched for age, sex, BMI, and angina symptomatology. All study patients underwent CTCA with subdivision of coronary lesion type into severe ( ≥ 70% luminal narrowing), moderate (50% ≤ luminal nar...

Effect of sacubitril/valsartan on natriuretic peptide in patients with compensated heart failure
Abstract The time-dependent changes in the natriuretic peptide families during sacubitril/valsartan (S/V) treatment remain obscure in the Asian heart failure (HF) cohort. Eighty-one outpatients with compensated HF were analyzed. The patients were divided into two groups based on the administration of S/V (n = 42) or angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor (ACE-I;n = 39). Changes to the natriuretic peptide families and the daily dose of loop diuretics were evaluated 3 and 6 months after the intervention. The atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) level was significantly increased (102 [63–160] pg/mL to 283 [171–61...

Associations among preoperative transthoracic echocardiography variables and cerebral near-infrared spectroscopy values at baseline before anesthesia in patients undergoing cardiac surgery: a retrospective observational study
AbstractCerebral tissue oximetry with near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is used to monitor cerebral oxygenation during cardiac surgery. To date, reduced baseline cerebral NIRS values have been attributed to reduced cerebral blood flow primarily based on a significant positive correlation between left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and baseline rSO2 measured with the INVOS 5100C oximeter. Reportedly, however, rSO2, but not StO2 measured with the FORESIGHT Elite oximeter, correlated with LVEF. We, thus, investigated associations among baseline NIRS values measured with three different oximeters before anesthesia for ca...
