Assessment of Different Middle Vault Reconstruction Techniques in Rhinoplasty from Multiple Patient-Reported Outcome Measures
This study included 129 patients. All techniques provided significant improvements in all PROMs (p < 0.001), except DPRwHS in NOSE. Between postoperative short- and longer-term, no significant differences were observed in DPR groups (p > 0.05), unlike structural techniques. In this comparative study of different middle nasal vault rhinoplasty techniques, we did not detect a difference in the improvement of the patient-reported outcomes of DPR techniques from as early as 2 months to 1 year postoperative. Change in Columellar –Philtral and Nasolabial Angles Over Time Following Rhinoplasty
This study aims to quantify and compare the degree of change in nasal tip rotation as measured by CPA and NLA over time following rhinoplasty and to identify surgical maneuvers or patient characteristics that may affect nasal tip rotation. Prospective analysis of CPA and NLA in 111 consecutive, consenting cosmetic, and/or functional rhinoplasty patients of the senior author over a 1-year time period was performed. Angles were analyzed before surgery, immediately after surgery, and at 1 week, 1 month, 6 months, and 1 year following surgery. Subgroup analyses based on surgical maneuvers and other covariates were performed. T...

Face-off: Social Media Responsibility in Medicine and Non-surgical Treatment of the Face
Facial Plast Surg DOI: 10.1055/s-0041-1741500The practice of reaching an audience through social media to promote non-surgical treatments of the face is in its infancy. Young adults, arguably the most health-literate generation to date, comprise both the majority of users targeted by social media and the fastest growing demographic seeking cosmetic consultation. We know that this age group is also at an increased risk of depression and body dysmorphia in an era where non-surgical cosmetic options are typically thought to be gateways to surgical treatments. In light of these facts, it seems the ethics of medicine might be l...

Mathematical Modeling of Eyebrow Curvature
Facial Plast Surg DOI: 10.1055/s-0041-1742200The aim of the study is to describe a mathematical model for analyzing eyebrow curvature that can be applied broadly to curvilinear facial features. A total of 100 digital images (50 men, 50 women) were obtained from standardized headshots of medical professionals. Images were analyzed in ImageJ by plotting either 8 or 15 points along the inferior-most row of contiguous brow cilia. A best-fit curve was automatically fit to these points in Microsoft Excel. The second derivative of the second-degree polynomial and a fourth-degree polynomial were used to evaluate brow curvature. Bo...

A Buccal Space Approach for Midface Free Flap Reconstruction
This article describes a transbuccal approach to reach the facial vessels. The anatomy of this intraoral approach is predictable, minimizing the risk of facial nerve dysfunction. This technique provides the possibility of free flap midface reconstruction with short pedicles and avoids the need to use vein grafts. Moreover, it is esthetically preferable. Through cadaver dissection and anatomical drawings, we describe extensively the different surgical steps. Using the combination of the previous knowledge and recent anatomical understandings, we can provide a reliable step-by-step approach to find the facial artery and vein...

The Quality of Online Information on Cosmetic Injectable Fillers: Current Status
This study aims to evaluate the quality of online health information on injectable fillers using the modified “Ensuring Quality Information for Patients” (EQIP) tool. Nine different search terms, including “fillers,” “fuller cheeks,” “wrinkle removal,” and “antiwrinkle treatment” were identified and queried on Google. Unique links from the first three pages of each search term were identified and evaluated if the contents were in English language and were for general non-medical public use. A total of 172 websites were analyzed, with a median EQIP score of 20. In total 129 websites belonged to aesthetic...

Tear Trough and Lid –Cheek Junction Anatomy: Current Understanding and Non-Surgical Treatment
This article will review the advances that have led to our current understanding of tear trough anatomy. We propose a new functional classification of the lid–cheek junction for soft tissue filler treatment, and suggest simpler stratification of patients seeking lower eyelid treatment based on the etiology of their tear trough depression. We aim to describe a stepwise approach to management, with specific technical considerations targeting the underlying causes of lower eyelid pathology. The common complications and pitfalls of non-surgical tear trough management will be discussed. [...] Thieme Medical Publishers, Inc. 3...

The 7-point Shape and The 9-point Shape: An Innovative Non-Surgical Approach to Improve the Facial Shape
This article presents two non-surgical approaches developed from the MD Codes system denominated “The 7-point Shape” and “The 9-point Shape.” Both techniques were designed to help create a more feminine and masculine look, respectively. The aim is to provide foundation for the midface (cheek) and contour for the lower face (chin and jawline) and indirectly improve the facial signs that patients usually focus on when looking for aesthetic treatment (lines, folds, jowls, double chin, etc.). The MD Codes platform aims to deliver an alternative to surgery with injectables. The 7-point Shape and The 9-point Shape may pr...

Three-Dimensional Technology in Rhinoplasty
Facial Plast Surg DOI: 10.1055/s-0041-1741501Rhinoplasty is uniquely suited to capitalize on different aspects of three-dimensional (3D) modeling technology. Currently, 3D surface imaging of preoperative and postoperative nasal structure provides a platform for better surgical planning and patient counselling as well as objective postoperative measurements. Physical nasal models using 3D printing technology can improve rhinoplasty performance intraoperatively, postoperative outcomes, together with nasal prosthetic manufacture, by tailoring to specific patient anatomy. Advances in tissue engineering using 3D-printed biocomp...
