State of the Evidence for Preservation Rhinoplasty: A Systematic Review
Facial Plast Surg DOI: 10.1055/s-0043-1768654Preservation rhinoplasty encompasses a number of techniques that minimize disruption of the native cartilaginous and soft tissue nasal architecture. These techniques have gained popularity resulting in an increase in publications relevant to preservation rhinoplasty. However, many studies that present patient outcomes are of low-level evidence and do not incorporate validated patient-reported outcome measures. While these studies do consistently report positive outcomes, there are few high-level comparative studies that support the theoretical benefits of preservation relative t...

Effect of Locally Administered Estradiol on Wound Healing in a Nasal Septal Perforation Animal Model
In this study, the epithelial regeneration, the fibroblast count, the granulation tissue formation, and the amount of collagen were significantly higher in the study group than in the saline group (p < 0.05). The acute inflammatory activity was lower in the estradiol group than in the saline group (p < 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in the closure rate of perforation between the two groups (p = 0.163). No significant difference was found in other comparisons (p > 0.05). The locally administered estradiol may improve wound healing of the nasal septum in an experimental NSP ...

Critical Degree of Orbital Floor Displacement Drives Operative Repair of Zygomaticomaxillary Complex Fractures: Findings from a 10-Year Retrospective Study
Facial Plast Surg DOI: 10.1055/a-2047-6646Among zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC) fractures presenting to a tertiary urban academic center, the authors hypothesized the presence of both clinical and radiographic predictors of operative management. The investigators conducted a retrospective cohort study of 1,914 patients with facial fractures managed at an academic medical center in New York City between 2008 and 2017. The predictor variables were based on both clinical data and features of pertinent imaging studies, and the outcome variable was an operative intervention. Descriptive and bivariate statistics were computed ...

Myomodulation Using Botulinum Toxin in Septorhinoplasty for Crooked Noses: Introducing the Concept and Application of Nasal Muscle Imbalance Theory
Facial Plast Surg DOI: 10.1055/a-2047-7179The role of septorhinoplasty for adequate correction of deviated nose is well documented, but the rationales and patterns for recurrences after proper rhinoplasty remain unclear. There has also been little attention given to the influence of nasal musculatures on the stability of nasal structures after septorhinoplasty. The aim of this article is to propose our nasal muscle imbalance theory, which may explain the potential reason for redeviation of the noses in the initial period after septorhinoplasty. We postulate that in a chronically deviated nose, the nasal muscles on the conv...

Effect of Upper Lid Blepharoplasty Surgery on Corneal Topography and Corneal High-Order Aberrations
The objective of this study was to prospectively investigate the effect of upper eyelid blepharoplasty surgery for dermatochalasis on corneal topographic data and high-order aberrations (HOAs). Fifty eyelids of 50 patients with dermatochalasis who underwent upper lid blepharoplasty surgery were prospectively studied. A Pentacam (Scheimpflug camera, Oculus) device was used to measure corneal topographic values, astigmatism degree, and HOAs before and at 2 months after upper eyelid blepharoplasty. The mean age of the patients included in the study was 55.96 ± 12.4 years, 40 (80%) were female and 10 (20%) were male. We f...

The Dynamic Changes in Skin Thickness of Forehead during Tissue Expansion
This study aims to identify the changes in the forehead flap thickness during the tissue expansion period. Patients undergoing forehead expander embedment from September 2021 to September 2022 were included. The thickness of the forehead skin and subcutaneous tissue were measured with ultrasound before and 1, 2, 3, and 4 months after expansion. Twelve patients were included. The average expansion period was 4.6 months, and the mean expansion volume was 657.1 mL. The thickness of skin and subcutaneous tissue in the central forehead changed from 1.09 ± 0.06 to 0.63 ± 0.05 mm and from 2.53 ± 0.25 to 0.71 ...

Optimizing Wound Care after Surgery of the Head and Neck: A Review of Dressing Materials
The objective of the present article is to review the most commonly used wound dressings, their benefits, indications, and disadvantages, and to provide a systematic approach for wound care within the head and neck. The Woundcare Consultant Society distinguishes wounds into three groups: black, yellow, and red. Each type of wound represents distinctive underlying pathophysiological processes with unique needs. Utilizing this classification along with the TIME model allows a proper characterization of wounds and the identification of potential healing barriers. This evidence-based and systematic approach can facilitate and ...

The Limits of Evidence in Rhinoplasty
This article intends to analyze which factors are involved in this and related developments in rhinoplasty.Evidence-based methodology sets the standards for scientific analysis. For rhinoplasty, however, limitations of established scientific methodology are identified. These include the relative lack of objective outcome measures and the impact of various systematic biases on reported results. These biases include operator dependence, interdependence of techniques, biased selection of outcome parameters, and orthodox treatment bias. Upon critical review, the importance of systematic biases may outweigh the impact of eviden...

The Efficacy of Magnesium Sulfate (MgSO4) Wet Dressing in Reducing Eyelid Swelling and Bruising after Blepharoplasty: A Randomized, Controlled, and Observer-Blinded Assessment Study
Facial Plast Surg DOI: 10.1055/s-0043-1767768The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of wet dressing with 50% magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) solution on decreasing eyelid swelling and bruising after blepharoplasty. Fifty-eight patients (23 male and 35 female) who underwent bilateral blepharoplasty were enrolled in our randomized clinical trial. One side of the periorbital area (upper and lower eyelids) per patient received a wet dressing with 50% MgSO4 solution randomly, and the other side was cooled with an ice pack from the first postoperative day for two consecutive days (30 minutes per time and twice a day)....

Pressure Masks for Facial Scar Treatment after Oncological Reconstruction: Long-Term Patient Satisfaction and Quality of Life
Conclusion Pressure mask treatment for facial flaps and scars following MMS results in good long-term patient satisfaction and QoL. Multiple local flaps, reflecting a larger skin defect postexcision, is a predictor for worse outcomes in social function, scar appearance, and symptoms. Increasing time is associated with increasing satisfaction, which reflects satisfactory and stable long-term effects of treatment, possibly combined with more acceptance of the result over time.
