Transconjunctival Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty with Volume Augmentation for Correction of the Lower Eyelid and Cheek Junction
Facial Plast Surg 2023; 39: 020-027 DOI: 10.1055/s-0042-1760114Aesthetic surgical management of the inferior periorbital region should include an approach to volume augmentation of the midface and infraorbital hollow, reduction of fat pseudoherniation in the lower eyelids, and treatment of the overlying skin. A combined approach using volume augmentation with fat grafting, a transconjunctival approach to the lower eyelid fat pads, and conservative management of the lower eyelid skin can produce optimal aesthetic results while minimizing complications. Fat harvest from the thigh and abdominal region allows for ample graftin...

Clinical Assessment for Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty with Attention on Negative Prognostic Indicators
Facial Plast Surg 2023; 39: 002-007 DOI: 10.1055/s-0042-1760111In the present report, a comprehensive approach on the assessment of the lower eyelid for blepharoplasty is provided. Important items such as anatomical key areas and surgical factors are discussed. Proper management of lower eyelid deformities requires an understanding of both intrinsic and extrinsic anatomical factors resulting in the unfavorable outcome. A Thirteen-Year Analysis of Facial Fractures among Professional Soccer Players
This study aims to identify the epidemiology and effects of facial fractures on return to play (RTP) in Major League Soccer (MLS) and the English Premier League (EPL). A total of 39 MLS players and 40 EPL players who sustained facial fractures from 2007 to 2019 were identified. Data on player demographics, the injury, and the impact of their injury on RTP were collected. Elbow-to-head was the most common mechanism of injury (20.3%). The most common fracture involved the nasal bone (48.3%). Most players (90%) RTP the same season. Players who sustained nasal fractures missed significantly fewer games (p < 0.001) than ...

A Novel Ear Cartilage Caudal Septal Extension Graft
Facial Plast Surg DOI: 10.1055/s-0042-1760296In cases of weak or deficient caudal septum, the caudal septum extension graft (CSEG) is the most commonly used reconstructive method. In the current study we introduce a newly-designed conchal cartilage CSEG and evaluate its cosmetic and functional outcomes. The graft has an average length of 3 ± 0.3 cm and composed of a distal double-layered part, which is 3 to 4 mm wide and a proximal single-layered part, which is 1.2 to 1.7 cm wide. The graft design allows the proximal single-layered part to be fixed on either sides of the caudal septum while keeping the distal do...

Novel Applications of Concentrated Growth Factors in Facial Rejuvenation and Plastic Surgery
Facial Plast Surg DOI: 10.1055/a-1987-3459Concentrated growth factor (CGF), which is a third-generation platelet concentrate product, exhibits good potential for repair and regeneration of soft and hard tissues, and has gradually attracted attention in the field of cosmetic plastic surgery. The purpose of this review is to summarize the application and research of CGF in the field of facial rejuvenation and plastic surgery. A comprehensive review of the literature about the applications of CGF in facial rejuvenation and plastic surgery was conducted in PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE, and Web of Science. According to the inclusion an...

Factors Affecting the Complication Rate of Septoplasty: Analysis of 1,506 Consecutive Cases of Single Surgeon
Facial Plast Surg DOI: 10.1055/a-1990-2818Based on the analysis of a single surgeon's consecutive cases, we present the incidence of septoplasty complications and factors that contribute to the increased risk of complications. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records from 1,506 patients diagnosed with deviated nasal septum who underwent septoplasty by a single surgeon from January 2003 until May 2020. The incidence of different complications was investigated. Predisposing factors for specific complications were examined with univariate analysis. The average age of patients was 35 (11–76) years. Out of 1,506 patien...

Efficacy and Safety of Polycaprolactone in Treating Nasolabial Folds: A Prospective, Multicenter, and Randomized Controlled Trial
This study explored the efficacy and safety of polycaprolactone gel in treating Chinese patients with moderate-to-severe NLFs. Patients with moderate-to-severe NLF who wished to be treated by dermal fillers were recruited from three centers between July 2017 and September 2019. The randomizing ratio was 1:1 in the polycaprolactone group (polycaprolactone injection) or control group (sodium hyaluronate gel injection). The primary endpoint was the effectiveness rate of Wrinkle Severity Rating Score (WSRS) scores at 12 months after injection. The full-analysis set (FAS) and safety sets had 80 patients in the polycaprolactone ...

Utilization of Virtual Consultations in Facial Plastic Surgery during the COVID-19 Pandemic
Conclusion Since the pandemic, VCs are more frequently used by surgeons and are mostly utilized as an initial patient visit. A majority of FPRS believe that VCs have improved health care in at least some cases, and plan on using VCs after the pandemic. Subperiosteal Midface Lift with Sub –Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System Rhytidectomy
Facial Plast Surg 2022; 38: 613-622 DOI: 10.1055/s-0042-1756454The subperiosteal midface lift is a powerful tool that allows the surgeon to reposition the SOOF and malar fat pad in a vertical direction. Additionally, it significantly softens deep nasolabial folds. Its effect, however, is minimal with regards to addressing the jowl, jawline, gonial angle and cervicomental angle. Combining the subperiosteal midface lift with an extended sub-SMAS rhytidectomy addresses the pre-jowl sulcus by releasing the mandibular ligament. The jawline and gonial angle become more defined with the transposition and suspension of the SMAS fl...

Lower Eyelid Transcutaneous Blepharoplasty, Minimizing Complications and Correction of Lower Eyelid Malposition
Facial Plast Surg DOI: 10.1055/a-1973-7656The periocular area is one of the first and most noticeable areas affected by ageing. Common signs of lower lid ageing include rhytids, prominent eye bags caused by prolapse of orbital fat pads, increased lid laxity leading to lid malpositioning, and deepening of tear troughs, all of which give a sunken aged appearance. Lower lid transcutaneous blepharoplasty can correct most of these problems providing excellent long-term aesthetic outcomes with minimal downtime for the patient. However, lower eyelid anatomy is complex, and a thorough understanding of its structure and function is...

Impact of the Location of Nasal Septal Deviation on the Nasal Airflow and Air Conditioning Characteristics
The objective is to examine, using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), the difference in the airflow and air conditioning characteristics according to the location of NSD. Twenty patients with septal deviation were divided into two: 10 caudal septal deviation (CSD) and 10 posterior septal deviation (PSD). Physiological variables were compared and numerical models for nasal cavity were created with CT scans. Cases with CSD had distinctive features including restricted airflow partition, larger nasal resistance, and decreased surface heat flux in the more obstructed side (MOS), and lower humidity and air temperature in the l...
