The Siconolfi step test: a valid and reliable assessment of cardiopulmonary fitness in older men with prostate cancer
ConclusionsSST provides a valid and reliable alternative to CPET for the assessment of cardiopulmonary fitness in older men with prostate cancer. Caution is advised when assessing men 60  years old or younger because the VO2peak predicted with SST was significantly lower than that measured with CPET. Premorbid physical activity is modestly associated with gait independence after a stroke: an exploratory study
ConclusionsPremorbid physical activity is associated with gait independence after a stroke, but this association is not as strong as those of age or history of stroke. (Source: European Review of Aging and Physical Activity)

Effects of Tai Chi Yunshou exercise on community-based stroke patients: a cluster randomized controlled trial
ConclusionTai Chi Yunshou and balance rehabilitation training led to improved balance ability and functional mobility, and both are suitable community-based programs that may benefit for stroke recovery and community reintegration. Our data demonstrated that a 12-week Tai Chi Yunshou intervention was more effective in motor function, fear of falling and depression than balance rehabilitation training. Future studies examining the effectiveness of Tai Chi Yunahou as a balance ability improvement strategy for community-dwelling survivors of stroke are recommended.Trial registrationChinese Clinical Trail Registry:ChiCRT-TRC-1...

Tracking of sport and exercise types from midlife to old age: a 20-year cohort study of British men
ConclusionThe stability of sport/exercise participation from midlife to old age varies by type. Specific sports/exercises in midlife may be more likely to predict future PA than others. However, participating in a range of sports/exercises may be optimal for preserving PA into old age. (Source: European Review of Aging and Physical Activity)

Masters or pawns? Examining injury and chronic disease in male Masters Athletes and chess players compared to population norms from the Canadian Community Health Survey
ConclusionsFindings from this study indicate that both athletic and cognitive engagement may be positively related to the physical health of older adults, since Masters Athletes and chess players reported a lower prevalence of chronic disease. Importantly, the results expand our current understanding of health by providing evidence for physical health outcomes associated with an activity that is primarily associated with cognitive health. Relationship between a three-month physical conditioning “posture-balance-motricity and health education” (PBM-HE) program on postural and balance capacities of sedentary older adults: influence of initial motor profile
ConclusionsAfter a 3-month bi-weekly PBM-HE program, we observed that sedentary older adults with the lowest initial level of balance progressed significantly more than high-level individuals, but only for basic motor abilities. It turns out that even among the most deconditioned people and older adults, very significant progress can be made. This increase requires an individualized training content focused on initial mobilizable capacities. (Source: European Review of Aging and Physical Activity)

Effects of 10-week walking and walking with home-based resistance training on muscle quality, muscle size, and physical functional tests in healthy older individuals
ConclusionThese results suggest that training-induced stimulation is associated with a decrease in EI in some thigh regions. Furthermore, the addition of home-based resistance training to walking would be effective for a greater reduction of EI. (Source: European Review of Aging and Physical Activity)

Lower bone mineral density in older female endurance skiers – a cross-sectional, observational study
ConclusionsThis pilot study suggests that long-term, high levels of PA are associated with low bone mineral density in older women, and the finding might be due to differences in BMI. Despite the lower bone mineral density the athletes did not report more fractures. (Source: European Review of Aging and Physical Activity)

Barriers and facilitators to adherence to group exercise in institutionalized older people living with dementia: a systematic review
ConclusionsWe conclude that institutionalized older people living with dementia, even those who are physically frail, incontinent and/or have mild dementia can demonstrate certain level of exercise adherence, and therefore can respond positively to exercise programs. Tailored, individually-adjusted and supported physical activity, led by a knowledgeable, engaging and well communicating therapist/facilitator improves the adherence to group exercise interventions of institutionalized older people living with dementia. Effects of physical, virtual reality-based, and brain exercise on physical, cognition, and preference in older persons: a randomized controlled trial
ConclusionsPE provided the best results in physical tests, VRE produced measurable improvements in physical and cognition scores, while BE enhanced cognition ability in older persons. Older persons preferred VRE and BE compared to PE. Both exercises are suggested to older persons to improve physical and cognitive conditions. (Source: European Review of Aging and Physical Activity)

Intra-rater reliability of hip abductor isometric strength testing in a standing position in older fallers and non-fallers
ConclusionAssessment of hip strength in a standing position is feasible, rapid and reliable. We therefore recommend this position for clinical practice. Future studies should investigate the diagnostic value of hip abductor strength in standing to discriminate between fallers and non-fallers, and to determine if change in strength following a falls prevention program reduces the risk of falls. Prospective analysis of time out-of-home and objectively measured walking duration during a week in a large cohort of older adults
ConclusionsBeing out-of-home increases daily walking duration. The association is strongest if the time out-of-home is 100  min or less. (Source: European Review of Aging and Physical Activity)
