Ageing and exercise: building body capital in old age
ConclusionThis study has provided insights into older women ’s understanding and experiences of the challenges of everyday life within a theoretical framework of cultural capital and health. The women acquired cultural health capital, and more specifically body capital, by participating in the group exercise classes. The women’s investment in body capita l through regular physical activity created resources which facilitated social participation. Therefore professionals need to be aware of this when performing group exercise. (Source: European Review of Aging and Physical Activity)

Influence of socioeconomic status on changes in body size and physical activity in ageing black South African women
ConclusionsOur study demonstrates the role and interaction of sociodemographic and behavioural predictors of obesity, and suggests a multifaceted approach to management of the crisis in communities of ageing urban African women. (Source: European Review of Aging and Physical Activity)

Self- vs proxy-reported mobility using the mobility assessment tool-short form in elderly preoperative patients
ConclusionProxy reports of mobility in older patients have good reliability. However, in patients with poor mobility, the proxies tend to report a lower mobility than the patients. (Source: European Review of Aging and Physical Activity)

The effect of aging on pacing strategies of cross-country skiers and the role of performance level
ConclusionsIn summary, master XC skiers adopted a relatively even pacing independently from their race time and the differences in pacing from the younger XC skiers were more pronounced in the slower masters. These findings suggest that exercise attenuates the decline of performance in master XC skiers as shown by the similar pacing strategies between fast master XC skiers and their younger counterparts. Relationships between muscle strength and multi-channel surface EMG parameters in eighty-eight elderly
ConclusionThese results suggest that inter-individual difference in muscle strength in elderly can be partly explained by surface EMG amplitude. We concluded that neuromuscular activation pattern is also major determinants of muscle strength on elderly in addition to indicator of muscle volume. Does physical exercise improve perceptual skills and visuospatial attention in older adults? A review
AbstractNeuroimaging studies suggest that when the brain ages, more areas are involved to perform a task in order to obtain the same results. This, together with the increase in crystalized intelligence and wisdom, is usually considered as a compensatory strategy. Research has demonstrated that physical activity might also act as a strategy and be one of the main factors that can slow down age-related perceptual and cognitive decline. Research also suggests that different types of physical exercise and sport lead to different changes in perceptual and cognitive skills as well as in several areas of the brain, especially th...

Exercise or physical activity and cognitive function in adults with type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance or impaired glucose tolerance: a systematic review
ConclusionsLiterature does not provide evidence that physical activity or exercise interventions contribute to a better cognitive function in patients with type 2 diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance. Large-scale, long-term, robust randomized controlled trials are required to determine if exercise improves cognition in this high-risk cohort, and to investigate putative mechanistic links between cognition, body composition, metabolism, and inflammation in diabetes and related metabolic syndromes. The beneficial effects of different types of exercise interventions on motor and cognitive functions in older age: a systematic review
AbstractThe decline in cognitive and motor functions with age affects the performance of the aging healthy population in many daily life activities. Physical activity appears to mitigate this decline or even improve motor and cognitive abilities in older adults. The current systematic review will focus mainly on behavioral studies that look into the dual effects of different types of physical training (e.g., balance training, aerobic training, strength training, group sports, etc.) on cognitive and motor tasks in older adults with no known cognitive or motor disabilities or disease. Our search retrieved a total of 1095 lik...
