The effects of interventions to enhance cognitive and physical functions in older people with cognitive frailty: a systematic review and meta-analysis
This study aimed to examine the effects of interventions on cognitive functions, frailty, and physical functions and provide an overview of intervention components used in older people with cognitive frailty.MethodsThis is a systematic review and meta-analysis. Medline, PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, PsycINFO, and Cochrane were searched for publishing during 2013 –2021. Studies were selected based on the following eligibility criteria: 1) older people (age ≥ 60 years), 2) cognitive frailty, 3) outcomes on frailty or cognition or physical function, and 4) randomized controlled trial with any type of intervention. The Phys...

Effectiveness of power training compared to strength training in older adults: a systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionsPower training offers more potential for improving muscle power and performance on activity tests in older adults compared to strength training. Future research should assess exercise parameters for power training in older adults. In addition, the validity and reliability of the tests used must be evaluated to establish a standardized test protocol. This protocol should also include measurements of physical activity in daily life. (Source: European Review of Aging and Physical Activity)

Going digital – a commentary on the terminology used at the intersection of physical activity and digital health
AbstractIn recent years digital technologies have become a major means for providing health-related services and this trend was strongly reinforced by the current Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. As it is well-known that regular physical activity has positive effects on individual physical and mental health and thus is an important prerequisite for healthy aging, digital technologies are also increasingly used to promote unstructured and structured forms of physical activity. However, in the course of this development, several terms (e.g., Digital Health, Electronic Health, Mobile Health, Telehealth, Telemedic...

“… Exercise opportunities became very important”: Scottish older adults’ changes in physical activity during Covid19’
ConclusionsHigher levels of PA were found to be associated with better health-related quality of life. Additional efforts should be made to support PA engagement in older adults, including strength training and other tailored approaches to support individual needs. Effects of blood flow restriction (BFR) with resistance exercise on musculoskeletal health in older adults: a narrative review
AbstractBackgroundAging leads to a number of structural and physiological deficits such as loss of muscle mass and strength. Strength training at ~  70% of 1 repetition max (RM) is recommended to prevent age-related loss of muscle mass and strength. However, most older adults may not be able to perform 70% of 1RM or higher intensity. An alternative exercise training program combining low intensity resistance exercise with blood flow restrict ion (BFR) can result in similar acute and chronic benefits to skeletal muscles in older adults.Main body and short conclusionThe potential mechanisms involved are discussed, and inc...

Effects of 3  months of detraining following cardiac rehabilitation in patients with atrial fibrillation
ConclusionIn older patients with permanent atrial fibrillation, previously achieved improvements from physiotherapist-led exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation in physical fitness and muscle function were lost, and health-related quality of life was impaired after ending the rehabilitation period. A strategy for conserving improvements after a rehabilitation period is essential. (Source: European Review of Aging and Physical Activity)

Physical activity and sedentary behavior trajectories and their associations with quality of life, disability, and all-cause mortality
ConclusionsOur results highlight the need for health policies and prevention strategies that promote PA and limit SB in middle-aged adults. Further studies should consider these activities/behaviors as exposures that vary throughout life and work to identify vulnerable groups of older adults for whom physical activation interventions and programs would be most impactful. Movement behavior patterns composition remains stable, but individuals change their movement behavior pattern over time in people with a first-ever stroke
ConclusionsThe composition of movement behavior patterns remains stable over time. However, individuals change their movement behavior. Significantly more people allocated to a movement behavior pattern with higher health risks. The increase of people allocated to sedentary movers and sedentary prolongers is of great concern. It underlines the importance of improving or maintaining healthy movement behavior to prevent future health risks after stroke. (Source: European Review of Aging and Physical Activity)

Factors associated with physical activity reduction in Swedish older adults during the first COVID-19 outbreak: a longitudinal population-based study
ConclusionsFor future pandemics or waves of COVID-19, development of strategies is warranted for older individuals with psychiatric- or physical illness/dysfunction, as well as those with poor social support to counteract reductions in physical activities. Interactive effect of socio-eco-demographic characteristics and perceived physical activity barriers on physical activity level among older adults
ConclusionsNovel evidence revealed that there are moderations by perceived PA barriers for the effect of almost all socio-eco-demographic characteristics. These findings highlight a need to consider older adults ’ perspectives and perceptions, when it comes to establish policies for PA participation. Being active with a total hip or knee prosthesis: a systematic review into physical activity and sports recommendations and interventions to improve physical activity behavior
ConclusionThere is general agreement on what kind of sports activities can be recommended by healthcare professionals like orthopedic surgeons and physiotherapists. No attention is given to amount of PA. The same is true for limiting sedentary behavior. The number of interventions is limited and diverse, so no conclusions can be drawn. Interventions including provision of feedback about PA, seem to be effective and feasible. (Source: European Review of Aging and Physical Activity)

The relationship of weather with daily physical activity and the time spent out of home in older adults from Germany – the ActiFE study
ConclusionsOur data suggest that weather parameters have a considerable influence on PA and TOH. Future analyses and interpretation of PA data should therefore account for weather parameters. (Source: European Review of Aging and Physical Activity)

Should knee extension strength testing be implemented as a screening test for identifying probable and confirmed sarcopenia in older T2DM patients?
ConclusionKES cut-off points using a simple hand-held dynamometer can assist in the identification of probable and confirmed sarcopenia using EWGSOP2 cut off points for low muscle mass in a population of older T2DM patients for further analysis and early treatment. This is notably true in patients possessing high body mass index (BMI) alongside normal ASMI and HGS, potentially reducing false positive sarcopenia screening results.Trial registrationClinicalTrials.gov PRS:NCT03560375. Last registration date (last update): 06/06/2018. The trial was a-priori registered before actual recruitment of subjects. (Source: European Re...
