Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in the follow-up of abdominal solid organ trauma: an international survey prior to the PseAn study
ConclusionsOur survey shows that CEUS is still underutilized in the follow-up of abdominal trauma, even though many emergency surgeons consider it as a valid alternative to contrast CT scan. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)

Incidence, treatment techniques, and results of distal humeral coronal shear fractures in children and adolescents —a multicenter study of the German Section of Pediatric Traumatology (SKT)
ConclusionIn pediatric patients CSFs start to occur at the age of 10, but are typically observed at the age of 13 and older. Because of their intraarticular nature and predilection toward displacement, these fractures are frequently treated operatively. The surgical strategy requires open reduction and anatomic reconstruction of the articular surface. Stable internal fixation, most often achieved by screws, permits early mobilization and leads to good outcomes in most cases. This is presumably due to the fact that mostly simple fractures occur in children and mostly complex injuries in older adults.Level of evidence: III, ...

The effect of a clock ’s presence on trauma resuscitation times in a Dutch level-1 trauma center: a pre–post cohort analysis
ConclusionThis study found no significant reduction in trauma resuscitation time after clock placement. Nonetheless, the data represent a heterogeneous population, not excluding specific patient categories for whom literature has shown that a short time is essential, such as severely injured patients, might benefit from the presence of a trauma clock. Future research is recommended into resuscitation times of specific patient categories and practices to investigate time awareness. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)

Assessment of soluble thrombomodulin and soluble endoglin as endothelial dysfunction biomarkers in seriously ill surgical septic patients: correlation with organ dysfunction and disease severity
ConclusionThe study concludes that elevated levels of soluble thrombomodulin and soluble endoglin can serve as endothelial biomarkers for early diagnosis and prognostication in seriously ill surgical septic patients. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)

Design and psychometric properties of the acute care quality in trauma emergency units scale
ConclusionsThe validity and reliability of the Nursing Care Quality in Trauma Emergency Units Scale were confirmed. The instrument could successfully assess the process of nursing care in the trauma emergency ward. The use of this checklist is recommended as a valid observational tool for other researchers.Study typeTherapeutic/care management. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)

High-power motorcycle accidents in Spain: a descriptive study
ConclusionsHigh-power motorcycles had higher scores in mortality and morbity rates than low-power ones, with a significant increase in mortality during the pandemic, even though number of accidents and medical assistance provided were drastically reduced. Psychiatric comorbidity and trauma: impact on inpatient outcomes and implications for future management
ConclusionsPsychiatric comorbidity negatively impacts inpatient morbidity and inpatient LOS. This effect is most pronounced among acute psychiatric episodes with or without a history of mental illness. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)

The relationship and predictive value of dementia and frailty for mortality in patients with surgically managed hip fractures
ConclusionDementia functions as a surrogate for frailty when predicting in-hospital mortality in hip fracture patients. This finding highlights the importance of early frailty screening for improvement of care pathways and discussions with patients and their families in regard to expected outcomes. Development and internal validation of a clinical prediction model for serious complications after emergency laparotomy
ConclusionSEAL is a simple and promising model for individualized risk predictions of serious complications after EL. Future external validations should appraise SEAL ’s transportability across diverse settings. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)

Epidemiological characteristics and factors influencing hospitalization burden among trauma patients: a retrospective analysis
ConclusionsThis study provided primary evidence on the hospitalization burden of trauma. Considering demographics, injury and hospitalization characteristics as additional discriminators could further intervene in LOS and medical costs. Targeted efforts to use more early prevention measures could potentially lower future hospitalization burden. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)

Surgical suction filter-derived bone graft displays osteogenic miRNA and mRNA patterns
ConclusionThis study revealed distinctly deregulated and exclusively expressed osteogenic miRNAs in SF-BGS, as well as overall enhanced osteogenic marker gene expression, as compared to the venous blood control group. These expression profiles were not seen in control samples, indicating that the derived material displays an osteogenic profile. It may therefore be a promising tool to generate a BGS or graft extender when needed. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)
