Distribution characteristics of perioperative deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and risk factors of postoperative DVT exacerbation in patients with thoracolumbar fractures caused by high-energy injuries
ConclusionsThe intermuscular vein is the most easily involved vein. The anatomical distribution of DVT at different fracture sites is different, and patients with thoracic fractures are more likely to have proximal DVT after operation. Age, lower extremity muscle strength, time from injury to operation, and blood loss were risk factors for postoperative DVT exacerbation. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)

European society for trauma and emergency surgery member-identified research priorities in emergency surgery: a roadmap for future clinical research opportunities
ConclusionsThis manuscript presents the priorities for future clinical research in academic emergency surgery as determined by a sample of the membership of ESTES. While the precise basis for prioritization was not evident, it may be anchored in disease prevalence, controversy around aspects of current patient care, or indeed the identification of a knowledge gap. These expert-crafted evidence-based mini-reviews provide useful insights that may guide the direction of future academic emergency surgery research efforts. Management of patients with proximal femur fractures under DOACs
ConclusionPreinjury DOAC use should not routinely delay surgery in patients with proximal femur fractures. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)

Reliability of preoperative conventional X-ray diagnostics for multifragmentary midclavicular fractures — a retrospective cohort study
ConclusionThe results of this study suggest that conventional X-ray diagnostics may not always detect comminuted clavicle shaft fractures. The treating physician should be aware of this issue. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)

Evaluation of a treatment protocol based on conservative therapy for fragility fractures of the pelvis
ConclusionOur FFP management protocol was effective regardless of fracture type. It is important to provide a period for careful assessment of instability, and to try to prevent fracture progression. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)

Impact of video recordings review with structured debriefings on trauma team performance: a prospective observational cohort study
ConclusionIn this study, we found that structured debriefings with review of patients ’ resuscitation video recordings can have a significant positive impact on trauma team performance in the emergency department in both technical and non-technical skills. Adjunctive hyperbaric oxygen therapy in the management of severe lower limb soft tissue injuries: a systematic review
ConclusionHyperbaric oxygen therapy is generally considered a safe therapeutic intervention and seems to have a beneficial effect on wound healing in severe lower limb soft tissue injuries when implemented as an addition to standard trauma care. Application of the PANELVIEW instrument to evaluate the guideline development process of the German polytrauma guideline
ConclusionThe PANELVIEW tool showed that the guideline group was satisfied with most aspects of the guideline development process. Areas for improvement of the process were identified. Strategies to improve response rates should be explored. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)

The efficacy and safety of pre-hospital plasma in patients at risk for hemorrhagic shock: an updated systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
ConclusionPlasma infusion in trauma patients at risk of hemorrhagic shock does not significantly affect mortality or the incidence of multiple organ failure. However, it may lead to reduced packed red blood cell transfusions and increased INR at hospital arrival. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)

Adverse events after surgery for injuries to the subaxial cervical spine: analysis of incidence and risk factors
ConclusionsSAE rates after treatment of sCS-Fx are high. The identified risk factors are not perioperatively modifiable, but their knowledge should guide intra and postoperative care and surgical technique. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)

Performance of trauma scoring systems in predicting mortality in geriatric trauma patients: comparison of the ISS, TRISS, and GTOS based on a systemic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionThis meta-analysis suggested that the TRISS showed better accuracy and performance in predicting mortality in geriatric trauma patients than the ISS and GTOS. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)

Long-term functional outcomes in polytrauma: a fundamentally new approach is needed in prediction
ConclusionContrary to their better than population norm preinjury health status, polytrauma patients remain functionally impaired at least 1  year after injury. The identified high risk for non-responding group needs more focused efforts for follow-up. A fundamentally different approach is required in polytrauma research which identify modifiable predictors of poor long-term outcomes. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)

Can “Stop The Bleed” training courses for laypersons improve hemorrhage control knowledge, skills, and attitudes? A systematic review
ConclusionSTB courses for laypersons have demonstrated significant improvements in knowledge, skill, confidence, and willingness to intervene to stop traumatic exsanguination. The evaluation of clinically relevant patient outcomes, specifically their effect on preventable deaths from traumatic exsanguination, is needed to strengthen further the evidence behind the recommendations for more widespread teaching of “STB” courses. Machine learning prediction models for in-hospital postoperative functional outcome after moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury
ConclusionThe study concluded that ML models could provide rapid and accurate predictions for postoperative GOS outcomes at discharge following moderate-to-severe TBI. The study also highlighted the crucial role of routine blood tests in improving such predictions, and may contribute to the optimization of surgical treatment decision-making for patients with TBI. Disparities in prehospital and emergency surgical care among patients with perforated ulcers and a history of mental illness: a nationwide cohort study
ConclusionOne-third of the population had a history of mental illness or vulnerability. Patients with a history of major mental illness were less likely to be identified with abdominal pain if calling the EMS prior to arrival. They had longer delays from hospital arrival to surgery and higher mortality. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)
