Enhanced recovery protocols in trauma and emergency abdominal surgery: a scoping review
ConclusionsStudies on ERP implementations in the EAS populations were published across a range of countries, with improved outcomes. However, a clear gap in ERP research on trauma laparotomy was identified. This scoping review indicates that standardization of care through ERP implementation has potential to improve the quality of care in both EAS and trauma laparotomy. DOAC plasma concentration upon hospital admission in a cohort of trauma patients. An observational real-life study
ConclusionThe current study revealed that patients on dabigatran and rivaroxaban were prone to higher DOAC plasma levels upon hospital admission in comparison with apixaban and edoxaban. DOAC plasma level measurement in trauma patients might be warranted due to unpredictively low or high plasma concentrations. However, the clinical impact of altered plasma levels on both, bleeding and thromboembolic events, remains to be determined by future studies. The semiconstrained DRUJ prosthesis: blessing or curse?
ConclusionThe semiconstrained Aptis-prosthesis is a safe and efficient treatment option after failed DRUJ surgeries. It is striking that of the 20 implanted prostheses no significant revision or explantations were necessary over a period of 25  years. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)

Assessing lower extremity loading during activities of daily living using continuous-scale physical functional performance 10 and wireless sensor insoles: a comparative study between younger and older adults
ConclusionThe use of wireless sensor insoles in a laboratory setting can effectively measure the load on the lower extremities during ADLs. These findings could offer valuable insights for developing tailored recommendations for patients with partial weight-bearing restrictions. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)

Characteristics of emergency general surgery services in Switzerland: a nationwide survey
ConclusionLack of higher level of care in small hospitals, limited emergency OR capacity and short rotations  of on-call teams are major drawbacks of many current EGS systems in Switzerland. Centralization of critically ill EGS patients and reorganization of surgical on-call systems to designated acute care surgery teams should be considered. Diagnostic value of protein S100b as predictor of traumatic intracranial haemorrhage in elderly adults with low-energy falls: results from a retrospective observational study
ConclusionIn conclusion, under real ED conditions, neither clinical findings nor protein S100b concentrations or presence of anticoagulation therapy was sufficient to decide with certainty whether a cCT scan can be bypassed in elderly patients with LEF. Further prospective validation is required. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)

The relationship between plate prominence and need for removal after volar plate osteosynthesis of distal radius fractures
ConclusionsThis study suggests an association between plate prominence graded by Soong and plate removal using a single plating system. Plate prominence should be reduced in volar plating whenever technically feasible. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)

Preventing extremity amputations after earthquakes: a quantitative analysis of fasciotomy and extrication time
ConclusionsAuthors believe that knowledge of the relationship between earthquake survivors ’ prognosis and time of extrication, as well as the impact of fasciotomy timing on extremity loss, is essential for a more successful treatment management in future disasters. High serum interleukin-6 concentration upon admission is predictive of disease severity in paediatric trauma patients
ConclusionSerum IL-6 levels significantly increased with increasing severity of paediatric trauma. Serum levels of IL-6 can function as important indicators for predicting disease severity and activity in paediatric trauma patients. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)

Liberal intraoperative fluid management leads to increased complication rates in geriatric patients with hip fracture
ConclusionsOur study suggests that intraoperative fluid volume is a significant factor that impacts the outcome of hip fracture surgery in geriatric patients. High-volume therapy was associated with increased complications. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)

Does the timing of surgery affect outcomes in young and middle-aged patients undergoing surgical stabilization of rib fractures? Feedback was based on real data from physicians, patients, and family caregivers
ConclusionFrom the experience of our institution's SSRF, early surgery is safe and offers additional potential benefits for young and middle-aged patients and families with isolated rib fractures. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)

Ultrasound assessment is useful for evaluating balloon volume of resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta
ConclusionThe diastolic peak velocity in the femoral artery disappeared when %BV was  >  80%. Evaluation of the femoral artery pressure by pulse wave Doppler may predict the degree of P-REBOA without invasive arterial monitoring. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)

Cardiac arrest in the perioperative period: a consensus guideline for identification, treatment, and prevention from the European Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care and the European Society for Trauma and Emergency Surgery
ConclusionsSuccessful prevention and management of cardiac arrest during anaesthesia and surgery requires anticipation, early recognition, and a clear treatment plan. The ready availability of expert staff and equipment must also be taken into consideration. Success not only depends on medical knowledge, technical skills and a well-organised team using crew resource management, but also on an institutional safety culture embedded in everyday practice through continuous education, training, and multidisciplinary co-operation. Characteristics of injury mechanisms in children and differences between urban and rural areas in central China
ConclusionOur findings revealed that in different age groups, the injury mechanisms are different in urban and rural areas. Burns are the second leading cause of trauma in children. A decrease in pediatric trauma over the past 10  years indicates targeted measures and preventive intervention may effectively prevent pediatric trauma. Electric scooter-associated orthopedic injuries cause long absence from work, regret and are emerging as a major cause of hip fractures in young individuals: a comprehensive study from a regional trauma center in a densely populated urban setting
ConclusionThe rate of e-scooter-related operative treatment is high and leaves the patient in regret (84%) and a physically limited condition (39%). A speed limit of  ≤ 15 km/h could decrease the rate of operative injuries. The e-scooter was identified as the top etiological factor in the last 2 years for traumatic young hip fractures.Level of evidenceII, Diagnostic cohort study.
