Intraoperative techniques to prevent deep incisional or organ-space surgical site infection after emergency surgery for nonappendiceal perforation peritonitis: a prospective two-center observational study
ConclusionWound protector devices should be used in emergency surgery for nonappendiceal perforation peritonitis. Gut barrier protein levels in serial blood samples from critically ill trauma patients during and after intensive care unit stay
ConclusionThe results of the present study showed that occludin, claudin-1, tricellulin and zonulin proteins, as well as I-FABP,d-lactate and citrulline, may be used as promising biomarkers for the evaluation of disease severity in critically ill trauma patients, despite the complexity of the analysis of various barrier markers. However, our results should be supported by future studies. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)

Comparison of the prognostic validity of three simplified consciousness assessment scales with the Glasgow Coma Scale
ConclusionThe simplified scales showed inferior validity than the GCS. Their potential role in clinical practice needs further investigation. Thus, the replacement of the GCS as the main scale for consciousness assessment cannot be currently supported. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)

Risk factors for thromboembolic complications in isolated severe head injury
ConclusionThe identified factors independently associated with VTE events in isolated severe TBI need to be considered in VTE prevention measures. In penetrating TBI, an even more aggressive VTE prophylaxis management may be justified as compared to that in blunt. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)

In vitro evaluation of a computer-assisted decision support system for the primary care of polytrauma patients
ConclusionIn a simulated environment, computer-assisted decision-making improved the performance of the trauma leader, helped to adhere to clinical guidelines, and reduced stress in a fast-acting environment. In reality, this may improve the treatment outcome for the patient. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)

Emergency thoracotomies in traumatic cardiac arrests following blunt trauma – experiences from a German level I trauma center
ConclusionBlunt trauma often results in severe injuries in various body regions. Therefore, potential injuries and corresponding surgical interventions must be known when performing RT. However, the chances of survival following RT in traumatic cardiac arrest cases following blunt trauma are small. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)
