Cardiac arrest in the perioperative period: a consensus guideline for identification, treatment, and prevention from the European Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care and the European Society for Trauma and Emergency Surgery
ConclusionsSuccessful prevention and management of cardiac arrest during anaesthesia and surgery requires anticipation, early recognition, and a clear treatment plan. The ready availability of expert staff and equipment must also be taken into consideration. Success not only depends on medical knowledge, technical skills and a well-organised team using crew resource management, but also on an institutional safety culture embedded in everyday practice through continuous education, training, and multidisciplinary co-operation. Characteristics of injury mechanisms in children and differences between urban and rural areas in central China
ConclusionOur findings revealed that in different age groups, the injury mechanisms are different in urban and rural areas. Burns are the second leading cause of trauma in children. A decrease in pediatric trauma over the past 10  years indicates targeted measures and preventive intervention may effectively prevent pediatric trauma. Electric scooter-associated orthopedic injuries cause long absence from work, regret and are emerging as a major cause of hip fractures in young individuals: a comprehensive study from a regional trauma center in a densely populated urban setting
ConclusionThe rate of e-scooter-related operative treatment is high and leaves the patient in regret (84%) and a physically limited condition (39%). A speed limit of  ≤ 15 km/h could decrease the rate of operative injuries. The e-scooter was identified as the top etiological factor in the last 2 years for traumatic young hip fractures.Level of evidenceII, Diagnostic cohort study. The New Zealand National Trauma Registry: an essential tool for trauma quality improvement
ConclusionsThe NZTR has proven to be a critical component of trauma quality improvement in New Zealand. A user-friendly portal and a simple minimum dataset have been keys to successes but maintenance of an effective structure in a constrained healthcare system is a challenge. Monolateral external fixation versus internal fixation of Gustilo IIIB open tibial fractures: a multicenter comparative study
ConclusionOur findings suggest that mono-lateral external fixation and internal fixation do not differ significantly with respect to rates of nonunion and fracture-related infections in Gustilo IIIB open tibial fractures. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)

Early administration of high dose enoxaparin after traumatic brain injury
ConclusionPrior studies have demonstrated that enoxaparin 40  mg BID dosing is superior to traditional VTE prophylaxis in trauma patients. However, TBI patients are often excluded from this dosing due to concern for progression. Our study showed no clinical decline in mental status in a small cohort of low-risk TBI patients who received enoxaparin 40 mg BID . (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)

Extremity injuries in the Sahelian conflict: lessons learned from a French Forward Surgical Team deployed in Gao, Mali
ConclusionCRIs were the most severe injuries and did not involve the upper and lower limbs separately. A sequential management was required with application of damage control orthopaedics followed by several procedures for reconstruction. NCRIs were predominant and mostly involved the hand among the French soldiers. This review supports the fact that any deployed orthopaedic surgeon should be trained in basic hand surgery and preferably have microsurgical skills. The management of local patients requires the execution of reconstructive surgery and therefore imposes the presence of adequate equipment. (Source: European Jour...

Injury patterns and outcomes in motorcycle passengers
ConclusionMotorcycle collisions can lead to significant injury burden and high mortality in motorcycle passengers. Middle-age females are disproportionally affected. Traumatic brain injury is the leading cause of death. Helmet use is associated with decreased risk of head injury and death. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)

The effect of dobutamine treatment on salvage of digital replantation and revascularization
ConclusionsIt was demonstrated that dobutamine infusion at a rate of 4  µg·kg−1·min−1 intraoperatively and at 2  µg·kg−1·min−1 postoperatively has favorable effects on the vascular compromise derived from no reflow of proximal artery. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)

Total intravenous anesthesia for geriatric hip fracture with severe systemic disease
ConclusionGeriatric patients who underwent hip surgery under FICB  + TIVA required fewer ICU admissions, shorter lengths of ICU and hospital stay, and had lesser postoperative opioid consumption than those who were under GA. Hence, we recommend the novel FICB + TIVA technique for hip fracture surgery in geriatric patients with poor general health status an d high surgical risks (ASA IV). Comparing outcomes of total hip arthroplasty versus hemiarthroplasty in neck of femur fracture patients: an Australian registry study
ConclusionDisplaced subcapital NOF patients who were admitted from home, had intact pre-operative cognition, ASA 1 or 2, independent walkers and had THAs, had shorter total hospital length of stay, were more likely to be discharged home directly and less likely to end up in residential aged care facilities compared to those undergoing hemiarthroplasty.
