Early experience with resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta for unstable pelvic fractures in the Republic of Korea: a multi-institutional study
ConclusionsThe effectiveness of REBOA has not been definitively established; however, it was not associated with increased mortality in this study. Additional studies are required to better understand how REBOA can be effectively used for treatment. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)

Plain X-ray is insufficient for correct diagnosis of tibial shaft spiral fractures: a prospective trial
ConclusionOnly 17% of PM fractures were identified on plain X-ray and awareness of PM only improved diagnosis by 39%. While experiencing improved accuracy, CT imaging should be included in a comprehensive examination of tibial shaft spiral fractures.Level of evidenceII. Emergency thoracotomies in traumatic cardiac arrests following blunt trauma – experiences from a German level I trauma center
ConclusionBlunt trauma often results in severe injuries in various body regions. Therefore, potential injuries and corresponding surgical interventions must be known when performing RT. However, the chances of survival following RT in traumatic cardiac arrest cases following blunt trauma are small. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)

Can trauma leagues contribute to better cognitive performance and technical skills of medical students? The experience of the Unicamp trauma league
ConclusionThe academic performance of TL students was superior to that of non-TL students at the University of Campinas (Unicamp), suggesting a positive impact of TL in the preparation of future doctors. The study findings suggest that participation in TL at Unicamp was beneficial in preparing better doctors and should be considered by medical schools worldwide.Evidence level: II (Retrospective cohort). Outcome predictors of patients who underwent limb amputation/s following trauma at a level I trauma center in North India
ConclusionFactors that affected the outcome were delayed presentation, hemorrhagic shock, higher ISS, NISS, MESS scores, surgical-site infection, and associated injuries. Overall mortality during the study was 8.6%. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)

Outcomes of resuscitative and emergent thoracotomies following injury at the largest trauma center in Estonia
ConclusionsEDT and ET outcomes in Estonian trauma system are comparable to similar advanced trauma systems in Europe. Patients with GCS  >  8, signs of life in the ED and with isolated penetrating chest injury had the most favorable outcomes. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)

Factors associated with the need for long-term total parenteral nutrition in survivors of acute superior mesenteric artery occlusion
ConclusionThe need for permanent TPN after treatment of acute SMA occlusion is significantly associated with longer hospital stay, longer time to intervention, and characteristic imaging findings (pneumatosis intestinalis, ascites, Smaller SMV sign). Ascites is an independent risk factor.Level of evidenceIII. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)

Sex disparities in adverse outcomes after surgically managed isolated traumatic spinal injury
ConclusionFemale sex is associated with a significantly decreased risk of in-hospital mortality as well as cardiopulmonary and venothromboembolic complications following surgical management of traumatic spinal injuries. Further studies are needed to elucidate the cause of these differences. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)

Parameters influencing health-related quality of life after severe trauma: a systematic review (part II)
ConclusionAge, gender, injured body region, and severity of injury were found to be good predictors of health-related quality of life in severely injured patients. A patient-centered approach, based on individual, demographic, and disease-specific predictors, is highly recommended. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)

Concomitant trauma of brain and upper cervical spine: lessons in injury patterns and outcomes
ConclusionsThe rate of concomitant cranial and upper cervical spine injury was 1.4%. Risk factors were female gender, age  ≥ 55, and pedestrians. RAs were the most common mechanism of injury. There was an association between the upper cervical injury group and longer ICU stay as well as higher mortality rates. Increased understanding of the pattern of concomitant craniospinal injury can help guide comprehensive d iagnosis, avoid missed injuries, and appropriate treatment. Recidivism after orthopaedic trauma has diminished over time
ConclusionRecidivism diminished, although more GSW and mental illness were seen. Recidivists are likely to be underinsured. The changing profile of recidivists may be attributed to socioeconomic trends and new programs to improve outcomes after trauma. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)

Stay and play or load and go? The association of on-scene advanced life support interventions with return of spontaneous circulation following traumatic cardiac arrest
ConclusionOn-scene ALS interventions were associated with increased ROSC at ED in our study. These data suggest that initiating ALS prior to rapid transport to definitive care in the setting of tOHCA may increase the number of patients with a palpable pulse at ED arrival. Simultaneous ipsilateral floating hip and knee: the double floating extremity —a systematic review and proposal of a treatment algorithm
ConclusionThe exact treatment strategy and the follow-up time are not uniform across the included studies; therefore, they are not sufficient to adequately recommend surgical approach, timing of fixation, and fixation method. Our findings warrant the need for better documentation and reporting information about the mode of treatment of simultaneous floating hip and knee injuries.
