Metabolic Bariatric surgery in People with Obesity aged ≥65 Years
Eur J Intern Med. 2024 Mar 30:S0953-6205(24)00134-1. doi: 10.1016/j.ejim.2024.03.029. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTObesity management guidelines recommend metabolic bariatric surgery for individuals with body mass index (BMI) ≥35 kg/m2, regardless of the presence of any obesity-related comorbidity; and for individuals with BMI 30-34.9 kg/m2 with metabolic diseases. Older age is not in itself a contraindication for bariatric surgeries, which can be performed after careful selection and assessment, to decrease the risks of postoperative complications. An essential amount of data has accumulated about bariatric surgery res...

Relation of plasma neuropeptide-Y with myocardial function and infarct severity in acute ST-elevation myocardial infarction
CONCLUSION: High plasma levels of NPY, measured 24h after STEMI, were independently associated with lower LVEF, decreased GLS, larger IS as well as presence of MVO, indicating plasma NPY as a novel clinical risk marker post STEMI.PMID:38555253 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejim.2024.03.027 (Source: European Journal of Internal Medicine)

Sex-based differences in the comprehensive geriatric assessment in elderly hospitalized patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation
Eur J Intern Med. 2024 Mar 27:S0953-6205(24)00118-3. doi: 10.1016/j.ejim.2024.03.014. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAtrial fibrillation (AF) represents the most common supraventricular arrhythmia, with a prevalence of 1-3 % in the world population. Growing evidences show that AF plays an important role as a risk factor for the development of cognitive impairment (CoI) and dementia, depression and functional limitation. The purpose of the study is to evaluate, in a large cohort of elderly hospitalized patients with nonvalvular AF (NVAF) on direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) therapy, the prevalence of CoI, depression, and fu...

Serum potassium abnormalities, renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitor discontinuation, and clinical outcomes in patients with chronic cardiovascular, metabolic, and renal conditions: A population-based analysis
CONCLUSION: In this large, observational study, hyperkalemia was linked to a greater likelihood of discontinuing RAASIs. Down-titration of RAASI was independently associated with unfavorable clinical outcomes such as hospitalization and specially mortality. Although the observational nature of the study, these findings underscore the importance of preventing circumstances that may lead to RAASI down-titration, such as hyperkalemia, as well as preventing hospitalizations and mortality, to ensure RAASI benefits.PMID:38548513 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejim.2024.03.021 (Source: European Journal of Internal Medicine)

The interplay between subclinical hypothyroidism and poor sleep quality: A systematic review
DISCUSSION: Overall, the existing literature data suggest a link between SHYPO and sleep disturbances, but further studies on larger populations of patients with homogeneous study designs and outcomes are warranted.PMID:38548514 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejim.2024.03.013 (Source: European Journal of Internal Medicine)

CONCLUSIONS: Recurrence of HTG-AP is common, especially for younger patients with diabetes. Recurrence necessitated additional hospital readmissions and was associated with compromised quality of life.PMID:38538416 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejim.2024.03.022 (Source: European Journal of Internal Medicine)
