Eating Disorders in the Adolescent Patient
Eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, female athlete triad, bulimia nervosa, obesity, and binge eating initially emerge during adolescence. These disorders are present primarily in females, but males may also present with these conditions. Dentistry has a pivotal role in the management of patients with such diet-related disorders. Because dentists examine their patients at frequent intervals and may be the health care professionals with whom patients feel more comfortable discussing eating disorders, dentists must have knowledge of the etiology, diagnostic criteria, systemic effects, and intraoral manifestations of ea...

Transitioning Adolescent Patients with Special Health Care Needs from Pediatric to Adult Dental Care
Health care transition from adolescence into adulthood is a complex process that often lacks care coordination, planning, and collaboration among the parties involved. Dental transition is significantly more challenging for adolescents with special health care needs. Shortage of qualified general dentists willing to treat these individuals and low dental reimbursement by public insurance programs are significant barriers to successful transition. Adequate training to increase dental workforce, insurance benefits, protocol development, and research are needed to ensure successful transition for this population. Meanwhile, i...

Adolescent Dental Fear and Anxiety
Adolescence, the period from 11 to 21  years of age, bridges the chasm between childhood and adulthood. Adolescence can be challenging as bodies, cognition, and personality go through major transformations, but it is also a time of great joy as confident adults with a clear identity develop. Dentists need to be knowledgeable about the developmental characteristics of this group because some of the cognitive and emotional changes make adolescents vulnerable to new fears. Dentists must tailor behavior guidance to this developing psyche in a way that respects independence and promotes confidence to foster lifelong positive v...

Legal and Ethical Issues in Treating Adolescent Patients
Adolescent patients may present with unique and challenging ethical dilemmas and legal considerations during dental treatment. From the moment the patient registers with the practice, the issues of medical history, informed consent, treatment decisions, and role of the patient and parent affect the dynamic of the doctor-patient relationship. Providers are challenged with balancing the physical, psychological, and social changes occurring in these patients and the changing relationships between the patients and their parents/guardians. State laws, practice standards, and consumerism in dental practice all affect the relatio...

Current Perspectives in Adolescent Care
In 2006, Dr Dennis N. Ranalli and I coedited the first issue of Dental Clinics of North America dedicated to adolescent oral health. At that time, journal articles and funded research were just beginning to emerge on the topics of adolescent health, and specifically, adolescent oral health. Following the first issue, we coauthored numerous articles on adolescent oral health, including body art, the adolescent athlete, and risky behaviors, among others. We had a strong interest in learning more about adolescent oral health and wished to convey that knowledge to other dentists and health care professionals. (Source: Dental C...

Fundamentals of Radiographic Interpretation for the Dentist
This article provides the fundamentals of radiographic interpretation beginning with evidence-based guidelines on dental radiographic selection criteria and cone beam computed tomography use. The goal is to present to the reader with a systematic approach to radiographic interpretation such that no significant features are overlooked and an optimal differential diagnosis can be achieved. In addition, medicolegal considerations of radiographic acquisition, interpretation, and storage are discussed. (Source: Dental Clinics of North America)

Radiology of Dental Caries
Dental caries is a dynamic, preventable, reversible, complex biofilm –mediated, multifactorial disease that involves a series of demineralization/neutrality/remineralization of dental hard tissue in primary and permanent dentition. An imbalance in the continuum with a net demineralization over time results in the initiation of caries lesions. Visual inspection and intraoral radiographs are vital in caries detection, although they are of suboptimal sensitivity for early caries lesions. Shifting toward a conservative, noninvasive approach to caries management has resulted in the development of innovative-sensitive technolo...
