Multi-level Interventions to Promote Oral Pre-exposure Prophylaxis Use Among Adolescent Girls and Young Women: a Review of Recent Research
We present case studies of these intervention approaches but limited data are currently available on the effectiveness of these approaches. We will look toward forthcoming study results on the impact of PrEP interventions, including mHealth, drug-level feedback and other enhanced counseling, peer support, decision-support tools, PrEP demand creation, modified refills, and integrated service delivery, to determine the ideal package of PrEP support approaches for AGYW. Novel Platforms for Biomedical HIV Prevention Delivery to Key Populations — Community Mobile Clinics, Peer-Supported, Pharmacy-Led PrEP Delivery, and the Use of Telemedicine
AbstractPurpose of ReviewA gap exists between PrEP interest and PrEP uptake in key populations (KP) for HIV prevention that may be ascribed to PrEP delivery services not being acceptable. This review summarizes novel platforms for HIV prevention outside of the traditional health facilities environment.Recent FindingsMobile health clinics provide highly acceptable integrated, KP-focused services at convenient locations with the potential of high PrEP uptake. Telemedicine and health apps decongest health systems and allow for personal agency and informed decision-making on personal health. Pharmacy-led PrEP delivery provides...

Cardiometabolic Complications in Youth With Perinatally Acquired HIV in the Era of Antiretroviral Therapy
AbstractPurpose of ReviewAntiretroviral therapy (ART) scale-up has dramatically reduced rates of pediatric HIV mortality and morbidity. Children living with perinatally acquired HIV (PHIV) are now expected to live through adolescence and well into adulthood, such that adolescents now represent the largest growing population living with HIV. This review aims to discuss the prevalence and mechanisms for cardiometabolic comorbidities in the setting of newer ART regimens and the research gaps that remain.Recent FindingsData highlight the continued risks of subclinical cardiometabolic complications in PHIV in the setting of new...

Cardiovascular Disease Risk Among Transgender People with HIV
AbstractPurpose of ReviewTransgender individuals are at disproportionate risk for HIV infection, with prevalence rates highest among transgender women of color. Antiretroviral therapy (ART)-treated people with HIV (PWH) are at increased risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD), in relation to persistent systemic immune activation and metabolic dysregulation. The purpose of this review is to examine parameters which may affect CVD risk among transgender PWH.Recent FindingsAmong transgender women and men, prospective longitudinal studies have shown that gender-affirming hormonal therapy (GAHT) is associated with select deleteri...

People living with HIV and the emerging field of chronic pain —what is known about epidemiology, etiology, and management
AbstractPurpose of ReviewChronic pain is common in people living with HIV (PLWH). It causes significant disability and poor HIV outcomes. Despite this, little is understood about its etiology and management.Recent FindingsRecent studies suggest that chronic pain in PLWH is caused by inflammation that persists despite viral load suppression. This coupled with central sensitization and psychosocial factors leads to chronic pain that is difficult to manage. PLWH with chronic pain often feel that their pain is incompletely treated, and yet there are few evidence-based options for the management of chronic pain in PLWH. Recent ...

Lessons Learned from Longer Acting Reversible Contraception Applied to Longer Acting HIV Prevention Technologies
AbstractPurpose of ReviewThis review describes lessons learned from longer acting contraception and employs a reproductive justice lens to inform expansion of emerging HIV prevention technologies.Recent FindingsReproductive justice is a framework that advocates for the promotion of universal sexual and reproductive freedoms, particularly among historically marginalized communities. This framework takes a holistic view of individuals and sees the interconnections between sexual health, reproductive health, and overall health. Employing a sexual and reproductive justice perspective is essential to understanding and helping t...
