The effect of a priming-based training on the production of object clitic pronouns in Italian speaking children with DLD
Clin Linguist Phon. 2023 Jul 14:1-34. doi: 10.1080/02699206.2023.2233049. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTChildren with developmental language disorders (DLD) have impaired morphosyntactic abilities despite age-appropriate nonverbal cognitive abilities and no hearing disorders or brain injury. The persistent omission of third-person object clitic pronouns (3DO clitics) has been proven to be a clinical marker of developmental language disorders (DLD) for both preschool and school-aged Italian-speaking children. According to the model of 3DO clitic derivation recently brought to attention, 3DO clitic omission is a morphosyntac...

Effects of task variations on language productivity, syntactic complexity, and stuttering in children who stutter
CONCLUSIONS: Task effects in language productivity did not differ by sentence category and suggested limited influences of propositionality and volubility in stuttering. In contrast, higher syntactic complexity was obtained in the stuttered compared to non-stuttered sentences at the word, phrase, and utterance levels and it was the same task - conversation, that elicited the effect. Additionally, variations in task demands did not result in significant differences in %SS. The findings inform assessment planning with the selection of tasks guided by task demands and assessment requirements.PMID:37439119 | DOI:10.1080/026992...

Evaluating the role of word-related parameters in the discriminative power of a novel nonword repetition task for bilingual children
This study aimed to test the discriminative validity of this NWRT and to identify the characteristics of the NWs that maximise discriminative validity within language-specific and language-non-specific subsets. The findings confirm the role of language specificity (in terms of target language alikeness) but also of other characteristics related to word structure complexity.PMID:37417967 | DOI:10.1080/02699206.2023.2226304 (Source: Clinical Linguistics and Phonetics)

Diagnosing inconsistent phonological disorder: quantitative and qualitative measures
Clin Linguist Phon. 2023 Jun 29:1-24. doi: 10.1080/02699206.2023.2224916. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTStudies of children's consistency of word production allow identification of speech sound disorder. Inconsistent errors are reported for two groups of children: childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) due to difficulty with the motoric precision and consistency of speech movements; and inconsistent phonological disorder (IPD) attributed to impaired phonological planning. This paper describes the inconsistent productions of children with IPD in comparison to typically developing children. In two studies of suspected SSD (N = 13...

How parents with aphasia deal with children's resistance to requests
This study aims to explore how parents with aphasia deal with children's resistance to requests in everyday interactions. It examines the interactional practices of parents with aphasia and their consequences for deontic authority (the right to direct another person's future action). Using conversation analysis, I conducted a collection-based study of request sequences in 10 hours of video recordings involving three parents with aphasia (two with mild and one with severe aphasia). Two different types of child resistance following a parental request were analysed: passive resistance (indicated by the child's inaction) and a...
