Protective role of informal social support and early childhood programs in reducing likelihood of subsequent reports of child maltreatment
Child Abuse Negl. 2024 Feb 28;149:106702. doi: 10.1016/j.chiabu.2024.106702. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: While past research has suggested the importance of informal social support and early childhood programs for the well-being of child welfare supervised families and children, little is known about whether or not these mechanisms function as protective factors for child welfare involved families and mediate the likelihood of repeat child maltreatment.OBJECTIVE: The study examined the role of informal social support and early childhood program participation in mediating the effects of initial report of child...

Facing uncertainties: The longitudinal relationship between childhood maltreatment and exploratory behavior
CONCLUSIONS: Given the critical role of uncertainty stress, promoting more exploration among these maltreated adolescents requires corresponding cognitive and behavioral interventions to adjust their perception and cognition of uncertainty.PMID:38423841 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2024.106714 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)

The role of emotion recognition in the intergenerational transmission of child maltreatment: A multigenerational family study
CONCLUSIONS: Findings highlight the importance of distinguishing between abuse and neglect when investigating the precursors and sequalae of child maltreatment. In addition, the effectiveness of interventions that aim to break the cycle of abuse and neglect could be improved by better addressing the specific problems with emotion processing of abusive and neglectful parents.PMID:38417291 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2024.106699 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)

Adverse childhood experiences screening in healthcare settings: A focus on pediatric primary care
CONCLUSIONS: We close with future directions for ACEs screening in healthcare settings and considerations for pediatric healthcare providers who may want to begin ACEs screening or adapt their screening and referral processes.PMID:38418328 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2024.106709 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)

Longitudinal relationship between harsh parenting and adolescent non-suicidal self-injury: The roles of basic psychological needs frustration and self-concept clarity
CONCLUSIONS: The findings support the self-determination theory, and suggest that fostering adolescents' self-concept clarity and satisfying their psychological needs may be useful in programs designed to lower the risk of NSSI.PMID:38412590 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2024.106697 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)

National training and development curriculum training program impact on placement, permanency, and stability
CONCLUSIONS: Evidence points to the effectiveness of NTDC in preparing resource parents to provide care for a diverse range of children by age, race, and ethnicity, and for those children to achieve permanency.PMID:38401367 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2024.106712 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)

Examining mediators of the association between child maltreatment and sleep disturbance in college students
CONCLUSIONS: Sleep hygiene may be implicated in the long-term health effects of child maltreatment. Further, sleep hygiene interventions may be useful for improving sleep among college students who have experienced maltreatment, and targeting students' sleep may have benefits for students' cognition and mood.PMID:38401368 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2024.106698 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)

Adverse childhood experiences, mental distress, self-harm and suicidality, and cumulative HIV risk by sex in Lesotho
CONCLUSIONS: Differential patterns of associations between ACEs and mental health problems and HIV risk emerged by sex. Scalable, integrated individual and community efforts to prevent ACEs, provide mental health supports, and encourage safer sexual behaviors among those exposed are needed and could benefit youth in Lesotho.PMID:38402043 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2024.106701 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)

The shifting trends in the epidemiology and risk factors of non-accidental fractures in children
CONCLUSIONS: The study findings suggest that nearly 1 out of all 20 fractures in children under age 6 are caused by NAT, and that rib/sternum fractures are most predictive of an inflicted nature. The study also showed a significant increase in the incidence of NAT, during and after the pandemic.PMID:38395018 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2024.106692 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)
