Spending on public benefit programs and exposure to adverse childhood experiences
CONCLUSIONS: Investments in public benefit programs may not only decrease poverty but also have broad positive effects on near- and long-term child well-being beyond the programs' stated objectives. Findings support federal and state efforts to prioritize families' economic stability as part of a public health model to prevent ACEs.PMID:38433038 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2024.106717 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)

Factors differentiating risk of sexual abuse victimization by adults and peers among adolescents
CONCLUSIONS: Adolescents vulnerable to sexual abuse exhibit common traits, regardless of whether the perpetrator is an adult or peer. Yet, specific factors heighten the risk with peers over adults, and vice versa. Recognizing distinct risk factors for abuse by adults and peers enables decision-makers and community workers to create targeted prevention strategies for children and adolescents.PMID:38430619 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2024.106707 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)

Leveraging machine learning for effective child maltreatment prevention: A case study of home visiting service assessments
CONCLUSIONS: Our study underscores the potential of PRM in enhancing the risk assessment tool used by a prevention program in a child welfare center in California. The findings provide valuable insights to practitioners interested in utilizing data for PRM development, highlighting the potential of machine learning algorithms to generate accurate predictions and inform targeted preventive services.PMID:38428267 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2024.106706 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)

Associations between early child adversity and lifetime suicide attempts among gender diverse individuals: A moderated mediation
CONCLUSIONS: By examining the mechanisms linking childhood adversity to LSA, this study demonstrates that not all ACEs impact gender minority subgroups equally.PMID:38422580 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2024.106705 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)

Protective role of informal social support and early childhood programs in reducing likelihood of subsequent reports of child maltreatment
Child Abuse Negl. 2024 Feb 28;149:106702. doi: 10.1016/j.chiabu.2024.106702. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: While past research has suggested the importance of informal social support and early childhood programs for the well-being of child welfare supervised families and children, little is known about whether or not these mechanisms function as protective factors for child welfare involved families and mediate the likelihood of repeat child maltreatment.OBJECTIVE: The study examined the role of informal social support and early childhood program participation in mediating the effects of initial report of child...

Facing uncertainties: The longitudinal relationship between childhood maltreatment and exploratory behavior
CONCLUSIONS: Given the critical role of uncertainty stress, promoting more exploration among these maltreated adolescents requires corresponding cognitive and behavioral interventions to adjust their perception and cognition of uncertainty.PMID:38423841 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2024.106714 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)

The role of emotion recognition in the intergenerational transmission of child maltreatment: A multigenerational family study
CONCLUSIONS: Findings highlight the importance of distinguishing between abuse and neglect when investigating the precursors and sequalae of child maltreatment. In addition, the effectiveness of interventions that aim to break the cycle of abuse and neglect could be improved by better addressing the specific problems with emotion processing of abusive and neglectful parents.PMID:38417291 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2024.106699 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)
