Parenting attitudes and behaviors among parents involved with the child welfare system and affected by substance use disorders
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings demonstrate positive changes in parenting attitudes and practices among parents who participated in Ohio START and provide further support for the potential merits of this model and its continued expansion throughout Ohio.PMID:38262180 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2024.106657 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)

Trajectories of homelessness and association with mental health and substance use disorders among young people transitioning from out-of-home care in Australia
CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrates that subgroups of young people transitioning from care exist with distinct longitudinal trajectories of homelessness, and these classes are associated with different risk factors. Early intervention and different approaches to tackling homelessness should be considered for these three distinct groups before transitioning from care and during the first few years after leaving care.PMID:38262181 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2024.106643 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)

Racial and ethnic disparities in diagnostic imaging for child physical abuse
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: We did not identify a consistent pattern of race-based disparities in occult injury testing when considering the concurrent yield for abuse-related injuries.PMID:38262182 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2024.106648 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)

Pathways of Care: A longitudinal study of children in care in Australia: Introductory article for special issue on Pathways of Care Longitudinal Study
Child Abuse Negl. 2024 Jan 20;149:106586. doi: 10.1016/j.chiabu.2023.106586. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe Pathways of Care Longitudinal Study (POCLS) is the first large-scale prospective longitudinal study of children and young people in out-of-home care in Australia. It includes a cohort of all 4126 children and young people (age 0 to 17 years) who entered out-of-home care for the first time over an 18-month period from May 2010 to October 2011 in New South Wales, with a focus on 2828 of these children with final court orders. It involved interviews with participating caregivers for children on final orders and stand...

Childhood maltreatment and mentalizing capacity: A meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: The controversy surrounding the link between CM and mentalizing capacity gains clarity when considering significant moderating variables. The pooled effect provides a preliminary definition of the magnitude and direction of this correlation.PMID:38245975 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2023.106623 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)

The effects of child maltreatment and exposure to intimate partner violence on the co-occurrence of anxious/depressive symptoms and aggressive behavior
CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest the co-occurrence of anxious/depressive symptoms and aggressive behavior among CPS-involved children and demonstrate the negative effects of CM and IPV exposure on children over time. The findings pinpoint the necessity of comprehensive methodological considerations for research and a lens of trauma-informed care for practice.PMID:38244382 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2024.106655 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)

Examining the role of child welfare worker characteristics and the substantiation decision
CONCLUSIONS: Further research to assess the differential nature of child welfare worker characteristics and their role in decision-making is required.PMID:38244383 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2024.106641 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)

Child abuse and neglect during the COVID-19 pandemic: An umbrella review
CONCLUSIONS: This study found consistent results across reviews; depending on the data source and study design, child abuse and neglect outcomes either increased or decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic. Future work should enhance data collection methods for surveillance and intervention of child abuse and neglect during public health emergencies when traditional mechanisms are limited, with an increased focus on the rigor of reporting.PMID:38241804 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2024.106645 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)

Reprint of: Associations between mental health problems and Adverse Childhood Experiences ACEs in indigenous and non-indigenous Mexican adolescents
CONCLUSIONS: ACEs were experienced similarly by both groups and were associated with mental health in all participants. Further research is needed to improve ACEs measurement in indigenous populations.PMID:38242770 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2024.106639 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)

What's missing? Violently injured Black men's narratives around Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)
Child Abuse Negl. 2024 Jan 17;149:106644. doi: 10.1016/j.chiabu.2024.106644. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences have been associated with future outcomes; however, Felitti's 1998 ACEs questionnaire fails to capture the experiences of Black populations living in disinvested neighborhoods making it necessary to expand the ACEs questionnaire to examine the life experiences of violently injured Black men.OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to advance the understanding of ACEs among Black male firearm violence survivors using the ACEs questionnaire and semi-structured interviews.PARTICIPANTS...

Adverse childhood experience and young adult's problematic Internet use: The role of hostility and loneliness
CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that ACEs have a long-term shadow effect on PIU in young adults. ACEs show an indirect association with PIU through both hostility and loneliness, as well as involving the relationship between them.PMID:38227984 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2023.106624 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)

Specific and cumulative effects of childhood maltreatment on nonsuicidal self-injury in Chinese adolescents: The moderating effect of sleep disturbance
CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that CM increases the risk of NSSI among Chinese adolescents, and sleep disturbance plays a moderating role. Interventions targeting sleep disturbance may hold significance in reducing NSSI.PMID:38227985 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2023.106627 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)

The prevalence of child sexual abuse with online sexual abuse added
CONCLUSION: The study highlights the importance of counting and including online sexual abuse in efforts to estimate the overall prevalence of childhood sexual abuse. The paper proposes 2 or 3 questions that could be added to sexual abuse questionnaires to assess these online offenses efficiently.PMID:38227986 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2024.106634 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)

Inequalities in out-of-home care rates in England: Does local party politics matter?
CONCLUSIONS: The contribution of local party politics to growing rates of out-of-home care remains under-theorised and under-researched, but there are potentially substantial differences along party lines that are masked by unequal exposure to changes in poverty.PMID:38219340 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2023.106590 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)
