Metabolic improvements following Roux-en-Y surgery assessed by solid meal test in subjects with short duration type 2 diabetes
ConclusionsWith a test meal of size and composition representative of the routine diet of post-RYGB subjects, improved glycemic and gut hormone responses occur which cannot be replicated by reducing the size of the MMTT in diabetic subjects not undergoing surgery.Trial registrationClinical Trials.gov Identifier:NCT00957957 August 11, 2009. Informing the development and uptake of a weight management intervention for preconception: a mixed-methods investigation of patient and provider perceptions

Overweight and obesity in children aged 3 –13 years in urban Cameroon: a cross-sectional study of prevalence and association with socio-economic status
ConclusionsOverweight/obesity is relatively common in sub-Saharan African children and prevalence is associated with HSES. However, this association may be mediated by sweet drink consumption, passive means of travel to school and not doing sport at school. We suggest that these potentially modifiable behaviors may be effective targets for obesity prevention. Further studies should specifically focus on unhealthy behaviors that mediate overweight/obesity as well as other non communicable diseases in children. (Source: BMC Obesity)

Neuropsychological function in individuals with morbid obesity: a cross-sectional study
ConclusionsSome characteristic cognitive weaknesses and strengths were evident at the group level, although pronounced variation was observed. Deficits in executive functions, information processing, and attention should be taken into consideration in clinical practice. (Source: BMC Obesity)

Complex association between rural/urban residence, household wealth and women ’s overweight: evidence from 30 cross-sectional national household surveys in Africa
ConclusionsAs nations develop and household wealth increases, rural African women are at increased or higher risk of being overweight compared with urban women. Programmes and policies to address rising prevalence of overweight are needed in both rural and urban areas to avoid serious epidemics of non-communicable diseases. (Source: BMC Obesity)

Randomised, double-blind, clinical investigation to compare orlistat 60 milligram and a customized polyglucosamine, two treatment methods for the management of overweight and obesity
ConclusionsEven though both groups were instructed to adopt a calorie restricted diet together with increased physical activity an additional weight loss in the polyglucosamine group of 1.6 kilogram (kg) compared to the orlistat group (6.2  ± 3.46 versus 4.6 ± 2.36 kg) in both centers was seen despite the higher consumption of carbohydrates in Italy (center 2). A typical Italian diet is usually high in carbohydrate content whereas Germans tend to consume meals with higher fat content. This leads to the assumption that polygl ucosamine limits both fat and carbohydrate absorption which would explain the comparable ...

Health communication implications of the perceived meanings of terms used to denote unhealthy foods

Body mass index –measured adiposity and population attributability of associated factors: a population-based study from Buea, Cameroon
ConclusionThe prevalence of overweight and obesity in this semi-urban Cameroonian population is high, affecting over a third of individuals. Community-based interventions to control weight would need to take into account gender specificities and socio-economic status. (Source: BMC Obesity)

Nutritional quality and marketing strategies of fast food children ’s combo meals in Guatemala
ConclusionsChildren ’s fast food combo meals in Guatemala were promoted using several marketing strategies that encourage consumption, including offering toy giveaways and price incentives. In addition, nutrition information is lacking in fast food chain restaurants. Public health advocates in Guatemala should consid er a comprehensive approach to encourage healthier choices within fast food restaurants including policies that require fruit and vegetable options for meal side dishes, accessible and easy to read nutrition information, and restrict the use of toy giveaways.
