Recreation, transportation or labour saving? Examining the association between household asset ownership and body mass index among Ghanaian women
Conclusion The findings indicate that at least one asset among the various domains of household assets examined is associated with either overweight or obesity among Ghanaian women. Also, increased household asset ownership is associated with increased odds of overweight and obesity. Interventions that aim at reducing sedentary and unhealthy dietary behaviours in the phase of increasing asset ownership maybe helpful in addressing the rising prevalence of obesity among Ghanaian women. Does BMI generated by self-reported height and weight measure up in older adults from middle-income countries? Results from the study on global AGEing and adult health (SAGE)
Conclusions These results suggest that SR BMI may not accurately reflect measured BMI in middle-income countries, but the direction of this discrepancy varies by country. This has considerable implications for obesity-related disease estimates reliant on SR data. (Source: BMC Obesity)

Demographic, health-related, and work-related factors associated with body mass index and body fat percentage among workers at six Connecticut manufacturing companies across different age groups: a cohort study
Conclusions Among manufacturing workers, we identified associations between individual, health-related, and work-related factors and baseline BMIand BFP that differed by age. Such results support the use of strategies tailored to the challenges faced by workers in specific age groups rather than adopting a one size fits all approach. Effective interventions should consider a full range of individual, health-related, and work-related factors. More work must be done to identify factors or strategies associated with changes in obesity over time. (Source: BMC Obesity)

Obesity trends and risk factors in the South African adult population
Conclusions A strong positive trend in BMI remains in South Africa and obesity prevalence is likely to increase. Trends are not homogeneous, and high risk groups (subjects with high socioeconomic status, rural dwellers, young women) and modifiable risk factors (physical inactivity) can be targeted. Subjects quitting smoking should receive additional weight-loss support in order that the numerous health benefits of cessation are not reduced by increasing BMI. Centrally obese subjects should be targeted in campaigns. (Source: BMC Obesity)

The effect of a multi-disciplinary obesity intervention compared to usual practice in those ready to make lifestyle changes: design and rationale of Whanau Pakari
Discussion This trial will inform the development of management programmes for obese children and adolescents that are appropriate for indigenous populations. It will investigate whether those at the preparation/action stage of “readiness” to make lifestyle changes are more successful in making changes than those who are contemplative. Trial registration Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry (ANZCTR):12611000862943. (Date registered 15/08/2011). (Source: BMC Obesity)

Relationships between mitochondrial content and bioenergetics with obesity, body composition and fat distribution in healthy older adults
Conclusions Adiposity and body composition are correlated with skeletal muscle mitochondrial content and electron transport chain function in healthy, sedentary, community dwelling, older adults. Specific relationships of mitochondrial bioenergetics with gender and insulin sensitivity are also apparent. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov identifier NCT01049698 (Source: BMC Obesity)

Excessive adiposity, metabolic health, and risks for genital human papillomavirus infection in adult women: a population-based cross-sectional study
Conclusions Obesity or central obesity was not significantly associated with prevalent any-type or HR-type HPV infection among adult women in general. However, in certain subpopulations, excessive adiposity or its relevant metabolic dysfunction was negatively associated with HR-HPV infection. (Source: BMC Obesity)

The talent study: a multicentre randomized controlled trial assessing the impact of a ‘tailored lifestyle self-management intervention’ (talent) on weight reduction
Discussion The monitoring of the study will implement different measures to enhance compliance, avoid attrition and ensure data quality. Based on a blended learning concept and using web-based e-health tools the program promises to achieve sustainable effects in weight reduction. Effect of therapeutic plasma exchange on plasma levels and total removal of adipokines and inflammatory markers
Conclusions TPE provides a persistent reduction in sICAM-1 levels and temporarily affects several adipokine and cytokine plasma levels. Our findings are of importance not only for the interpretation of blood levels of cytokines in patients undergoing TPE but provide solid evidence that TPE markedly decreases sICAM-1. A protocol for developing an evaluation framework for an academic and private-sector partnership to assess the impact of major food and beverage companies’ investments in community health in the United States
Abstract Public health leaders increasingly recognize the importance of multi-sector partnerships and systems approaches to address obesity. Public-private partnerships (PPP), which are joint ventures between government agencies and private sector entities, may help facilitate this process, but need to be delivered through comprehensive, transparent frameworks to maximize potential benefits and minimize potential risks for all partners. The City University of New York (CUNY) School of Public Health and the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation (HWCF) propose to engage in a unique academic-private-sector ...

Parental employment during early childhood and overweight at 7-years: findings from the UK Millennium Cohort Study
Conclusions Children living in workless households or where two parents are full-time employed have increased risks of overweight. These findings may imply the need for changes to enable parents to maintain healthy lifestyles for their children in the face of wider obesogenic influences. (Source: BMC Obesity)

Overweight, obesity, physical activity and sugar-sweetened beverage consumption in adolescents of Pacific islands: results from the Global School-Based Student Health Survey and the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System
Conclusion There is a need for urgent action on overweight, obesity and their risk factors in Pacific youth. The multiple social, economic and physical determinants of this public health crisis must be addressed. This requires all sectors within government and society in PICTs to implement and evaluate policies that will protect and promote the health of their populations across the life course. Obesity and inflammation markers in relation to leukocyte telomere length in a cross-sectional study of persons with Barrett’s esophagus
Conclusions Increasing age, male gender, smoking history, and sTNF-RI levels were associated with short LTL among persons with BE but no correlations were observed between LTL and other inflammatory markers or measures of obesity. Larger longitudinal studies are necessary in order to further establish the potential relationships between obesity, inflammation markers and LTL. (Source: BMC Obesity)

UK adults’ implicit and explicit attitudes towards obesity: a cross-sectional study
Conclusions This is the first study to demonstrate anti-fat attitudes across different sections of the UK population. As such, this study provides the first indication of the prevalence of anti-fat attitudes in UK adults. Interventions to modify these attitudes could target specific groups of individuals with more negative perceptions as identified here. Future work would be useful that increases understanding of both implicit and explicit attitudes towards obesity. (Source: BMC Obesity)
