Mighty Mums – a lifestyle intervention at primary care level reduces gestational weight gain in women with obesity
ConclusionPregnant women with obesity who follow a lifestyle intervention programme in primary health care can limit their weight gain during pregnancy and show less weight retention after pregnancy. This modest intervention can easily be implemented in a primary care setting.Trial registrationThe study has been registered at ClinicalTrials.gov, Identifier:NCT03147079. May 10 2017, retrospectively registered. (Source: BMC Obesity)

Improved physiology and metabolic flux after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is associated with temporal changes in the circulating microRNAome: a longitudinal study in humans
ConclusionsThe results of this pilot study show that RYGB fundamentally alters microRNA expression in circulation with a time-dependent progressive departure in profile from the preoperative baseline and indicate that microRNAs are potentially novel biomarkers for the benefits of bariatric surgery. Abdominal obesity in type 1 diabetes associated with gender, cardiovascular risk factors and complications, and difficulties achieving treatment targets: a cross sectional study at a secondary care diabetes clinic
ConclusionsSignificant associations between abdominal obesity and gender, cardiovascular disease, and the cardiovascular risk factors low-grade inflammation, systolic blood pressure, high HbA1c, and triglycerides, were found in 284 T1D patients. Fewer patients with abdominal obesity reached the treatment targets for HbA1c and systolic blood pressure compared to the non-obese. (Source: BMC Obesity)

The association between high-sensitivity C-reactive protein and metabolic risk factors in black and white South African women: a cross-sectional study
ConclusionAlthough circulating hsCRP may identify individuals at increased metabolic risk, the heterogeneity in these associations between racial/ethnic groups highlights the need for prospective studies investigating the role of hsCRP for risk prediction in different populations. Hemodynamic patterns in obesity associated hypertension
ConclusionsObese patients, including those with uncontrolled HT, had increased CI and SVRI. The only predictor of uncontrolled HT, however, was CI, suggesting that the obese present a state of hyperinotropy and may benefit of “add-on” or increase treatment with beta-blockers. (Source: BMC Obesity)

Medium and long-term results of gastric banding: outcomes from a large private clinic in UK
ConclusionThis is the first study to report on LAGB outcomes from a private clinic in the UK. LAGB is a safe procedure, which delivers significant and durable weight loss with acceptable complications rates and low re-operation rate. (Source: BMC Obesity)

Community-based childhood obesity prevention intervention for parents improves health behaviors and food parenting practices among Hispanic, low-income parents
ConclusionsAlthough attrition rates were high, parents completing the study reported  enjoying and being satisfied with the intervention. For parents who completed the intervention, reported ‘encouragement of balance and variety’, in addition to several health behaviors significantly improved. Larger studies utilizing an experimental design, should further explore the impact o f the HCHF curriculum on improving certain FPPs and health behaviors that contribute to obesity.
