Bias in Laboratory Medicine: The Dark Side of the Moon
Ann Lab Med. 2024 Jan 1;44(1):6-20. doi: 10.3343/alm.2024.44.1.6. Epub 2023 Sep 4.ABSTRACTPhysicians increasingly use laboratory-produced information for disease diagnosis, patient monitoring, treatment planning, and evaluations of treatment effectiveness. Bias is the systematic deviation of laboratory test results from the actual value, which can cause misdiagnosis or misestimation of disease prognosis and increase healthcare costs. Properly estimating and treating bias can help to reduce laboratory errors, improve patient safety, and considerably reduce healthcare costs. A bias that is statistically and medically signifi...

Ionized Magnesium Correlates With Total Blood Magnesium in Pediatric Patients Following Kidney Transplant
CONCLUSIONS: tMg and iMg exhibited strong correlation following kidney transplantation. However, iCa may not be an accurate surrogate for iMg. Determining the effect of Mg supplementation and the Mg concentration where supplementation is clinically necessary are important next steps.PMID:37665282 | PMC:PMC10485856 | DOI:10.3343/alm.2024.44.1.21 (Source: Annals of Laboratory Medicine)

Comparison of Direct and Extraction Immunoassay Methods With Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry Measurement of Urinary Free Cortisol for the Diagnosis of Cushing's Syndrome
CONCLUSIONS: Commercially available immunoassays for measuring UFC show different levels of analytical consistency compared to LC-MS/MS. Abbott-D, Siemens-E, and Beckman-E have high diagnostic accuracy for CS.PMID:37665283 | PMC:PMC10485861 | DOI:10.3343/alm.2024.44.1.29 (Source: Annals of Laboratory Medicine)

Changing Genotypic Distribution, Antimicrobial Susceptibilities, and Risk Factors of Urinary Tract Infection Caused by Carbapenemase-Producing < em > Pseudomonas aeruginosa < /em >
CONCLUSIONS: The changing trend and genetic distribution of CPPA isolates emphasize the need for relentless monitoring to control further dissemination. The use of carbapenems, ICU stay, and WBC count should be considered risk factors, and aggressive antibiotic stewardship programs and monitoring may serve to prevent worse outcomes.PMID:37665284 | PMC:PMC10485864 | DOI:10.3343/alm.2024.44.1.38 (Source: Annals of Laboratory Medicine)

Comparative Genomic Analysis of Staphylococcal Cassette Chromosome < em > mec < /em > Type V < em > Staphylococcus aureus < /em > Strains and Estimation of the Emergence of SCC < em > mec < /em > V Clinical Isolates in Korea
CONCLUSIONS: Most Korean SCCmec V strains may have emerged during 2000-2010. A unique MRSA SCCmec V strain, ST72 (a Korean common type of community-associated MRSA), was also identified. The genomic dynamics of this clone with a zoonotic background should be monitored to accurately understand MRSA evolution.PMID:37665285 | PMC:PMC10485862 | DOI:10.3343/alm.2024.44.1.47 (Source: Annals of Laboratory Medicine)
