Longitudinal associations between adult-supervised drinking during adolescence and alcohol misuse from ages 25-31  years: A comparison of Australia and the United States
Addict Behav. 2024 Feb 13;153:107984. doi: 10.1016/j.addbeh.2024.107984. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPrior studies suggest that adult supervised drinking in adolescence predicts greater adolescent alcohol misuse. Long-term follow up data examining how adult supervised drinking during adolescence relates to alcohol misuse in adulthood are lacking. Longitudinal data from the International Youth Development Study tested associations between adult supervised drinking during adolescence (ages 13-16; 2002-2004) and adult alcohol misuse (ages 25-31; 2014, 2018, 2020). Cross-nationally matched samples were compared in Washington...

Social anxiety and problematic social media use: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Addict Behav. 2024 Feb 22;153:107995. doi: 10.1016/j.addbeh.2024.107995. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSome theories posit a close relationship between social anxiety and problematic social media use; however, empirical findings are inconsistent, and existing hypotheses are conflicting. Hence, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to clarify the relationship between social anxiety and problematic social media use. After searching and screening the literature, we identified 53 studies, including 59,928 participants and 56 effect sizes, for analysis. A meta-analysis was subsequently performed using CMA software....

Race/ethnic differences in the association of anxiety, depression, and discrimination with subsequent nicotine and cannabis use among young adults: A prospective longitudinal study
CONCLUSIONS: Psychosocial stressors are associated with increased substance use odds among young adults. However, these stressors have a differential impact on substance use odds among young adults from different racial/ethnic contexts.PMID:38394958 | DOI:10.1016/j.addbeh.2024.107979 (Source: Addictive Behaviors)

Evidence for sex differences in the impact of cytochrome P450 genotypes on early subjective effects of cannabis
Addict Behav. 2024 Feb 21;153:107996. doi: 10.1016/j.addbeh.2024.107996. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEarly positive subjective effects of cannabis predict the development of cannabis use disorder (CUD). Genetic factors, such as the presence of cytochrome P450 genetic variants that are associated with reduced Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) metabolism, may contribute to individual differences in subjective effects of cannabis. Young adults (N = 54) with CUD or a non-CUD substance use disorder (control) provided a blood sample for DNA analysis and self-reported their early (i.e., effects upon initial uses) and past-year pos...

A narrative systematic review of associations and temporality between use of methamphetamine, ecstasy/MDMA, or cocaine with anxiety or depressive symptoms
CONCLUSIONS: There was some evidence to support a case for temporality, particularly for methamphetamine use and depressive symptoms. Investing in longitudinal studies is pivotal to understanding the dynamic and reciprocal relationship between illicit stimulant use and anxiety or depressive symptoms. A limitation of the study was the variation in the measurement and analysis of outcomes.PMID:38394960 | DOI:10.1016/j.addbeh.2024.107988 (Source: Addictive Behaviors)

Problematic social media use in childhood and adolescence
Addict Behav. 2024 Feb 8;153:107980. doi: 10.1016/j.addbeh.2024.107980. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAt the time of writing, about 4.59 billion people use social media with many adolescents using their social media accounts across a myriad of applications and platforms. According to recent statistics, in 2022 individuals spent an average of 151 minutes on social media each day, illustrating the global relevance of social media (Dixon, 2022a,b). One of the pressing questions, internationally, is whether social media use is harmful and/or addictive. This question is of particular importance because many teenagers - and youn...

Daily mindfulness homework completion is associated with reduced drinking during a mindfulness-enriched emotion regulation treatment for alcohol use disorder
Addict Behav. 2024 Feb 19;153:107987. doi: 10.1016/j.addbeh.2024.107987. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHomework is widely used in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for alcohol use disorder (AUD). Theoretically, homework helps clients generalize skills acquired during treatment to their daily lives. However, clinical trials methodology has typically employed pre- and post-treatment assessments which has made evaluating the contribution of homework to behavior change a challenge. The current study leveraged daily diary data from a clinical trial of CBT for AUD to parse within- and between-person associations of mindfulness ...

Cannabis advertising impacts on youth cannabis use intentions following recreational legalization in Canada: An Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) study
CONCLUSION: Data from this study shows that cannabis advertisements are regularly reaching Canadian youth and increasing their intentions to use cannabis. This suggests that current Canadian prohibitions on cannabis advertising to youth are ineffective and/or ineffectively enforced, and that the Canadian government needs additional or enhanced prohibitions on cannabis promotion to protect youth from harms associated with increased advertisement exposure, such as increased cannabis use.PMID:38367505 | DOI:10.1016/j.addbeh.2024.107981 (Source: Addictive Behaviors)

The effect of maternal prenatal tobacco smoking on offspring academic achievement: A systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: Our review found a positive association between maternal prenatal tobacco smoking and offspring reduced academic achievement. However, variation in the adjustment of potential confounders and significant heterogeneity across included studies limited more conclusive inference. Mechanistic studies to identify causal pathways and specific academic impacts are needed to inform targeted developmental programs to assist child learning and academic performance.PMID:38367506 | DOI:10.1016/j.addbeh.2024.107985 (Source: Addictive Behaviors)

Indirect effects of emotion regulation in the relationship between pain and cannabis use in adults 18-64  years
CONCLUSIONS: When examining parallel indirect effects, only emotional regulation and not distress tolerance mediated the relationship between chronic pain and cannabis use among those with an opioid prescription. Clinically, interventions aimed at improving emotional regulation in individuals with chronic pain can help limit cannabis and opioid co-use.PMID:38367507 | DOI:10.1016/j.addbeh.2024.107983 (Source: Addictive Behaviors)
