Life-course Accumulated Cannabis Use and Recent Cannabis-related Problems in the Washington Panel Survey
CONCLUSIONS: This study established the relationship between lifetime exposure to cannabis and cannabis-related problems in a representative sample of drinkers and marijuana users in Washington state. We have also provided test-retest validity and question details for the decades-based cannabis and heavy drinking measures to facilitate their use in future studies of cannabis and alcohol-related outcomes.PMID:38277992 | DOI:10.1016/j.addbeh.2024.107957 (Source: Addictive Behaviors)

Tobacco use behavior among adults exposed to cumulative adverse childhood experiences: A systematic review and meta analysis
CONCLUSION: The cumulative ACEs exposure can increase the risk for TUB. However, the evidence is limited primarily to cigarette use. Ongoing research into the effects of cumulative ACEs on TUB is needed to integrate trauma-informed intervention in treating tobacco use and guide public health initiatives aimed to reduce the prevalence of ACEs and TUB among adults.PMID:38277993 | DOI:10.1016/j.addbeh.2023.107948 (Source: Addictive Behaviors)

Dual and poly-nicotine and tobacco use among adolescents in the United States from 2011 to 2022
CONCLUSIONS: Previously declining trends in the prevalence of tobacco/nicotine dual and poly use may have been reversed. Close monitoring and targeted tobacco control policies are essential to tackle multiple product use among adolescents.PMID:38277994 | DOI:10.1016/j.addbeh.2024.107970 (Source: Addictive Behaviors)

The independent and joint effect of socioeconomic status and Multiracial status on the prevalence and frequency of substance use and depression among U.S. adolescents
CONCLUSION: Our findings suggested that NHM adolescents, particularly those from high income families, exhibit increased prevalence of drug use and depression than NHW adolescents. As the US becomes more diverse, there is a need to further examine the social and structural factors driving the identified racial differences.PMID:38232635 | DOI:10.1016/j.addbeh.2024.107953 (Source: Addictive Behaviors)

Mixed method examination of alcohol and suicidality among actively suicidal adults who engage in heavy episodic drinking
We examined the association between alcohol use and SI using a mixed methods approach that included daily assessments from 13 adults who engage in heavy episodic drinking with current SI and qualitative interviews among 12 of those adults. Participants were recruited on social media. Separate mixed effects logistic regression models indicated that individuals' alcohol use on a given day was associated with SI (OR = 1.37), and suicidal urges (OR = 1.41). Adjusting for repeated measures, the expected marginal mean for intensity of SI (EMM = 3.33) and urges (EMM = 2.94) were higher on days with reported drinking behavior than...

Effect of early medication adherence on behavioral treatment utilization and smoking cessation among individuals with current or past major depressive disorder
CONCLUSIONS: The effect of early medication adherence on abstinence in individuals with current or past MDD is mediated by intensive BT utilization.PMID:38199093 | DOI:10.1016/j.addbeh.2024.107952 (Source: Addictive Behaviors)

Characterizing the dimensions of positive emotion functioning in young adult alcohol use and alcohol-related problems
Addict Behav. 2023 Dec 23;151:107950. doi: 10.1016/j.addbeh.2023.107950. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEmotional functioning figures prominently in most contemporary models of alcohol use (Kassel & Veilleux, 2010). These models posit that alcohol use becomes reinforced due to its ability to regulate a person's affect (Sher & Grekin, 2007). A growing body of literature suggests that for youth, positive reinforcement (i.e., using alcohol to enhance positive feelings or to increase their duration) is a leading mechanism facilitating increased use (Emery & Simons 2020; Howard et al., 2015). However, few, if any, st...
