Characterizing the dimensions of positive emotion functioning in young adult alcohol use and alcohol-related problems
Addict Behav. 2023 Dec 23;151:107950. doi: 10.1016/j.addbeh.2023.107950. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEmotional functioning figures prominently in most contemporary models of alcohol use (Kassel & Veilleux, 2010). These models posit that alcohol use becomes reinforced due to its ability to regulate a person's affect (Sher & Grekin, 2007). A growing body of literature suggests that for youth, positive reinforcement (i.e., using alcohol to enhance positive feelings or to increase their duration) is a leading mechanism facilitating increased use (Emery & Simons 2020; Howard et al., 2015). However, few, if any, st...

Comparing identity, attitudes, and indicators of effectiveness in people who smoke, vape or use heated tobacco products: A cross-sectional study
CONCLUSIONS: HTP and NVP users perceived products to be similarly acceptable and effective suggesting that HTPs, like NVPs, may support smoking cessation. However, since HTP use appears to maintain a stronger smoker identity and perceived addiction, this may suggest a more limited role of HTP for a permanent transition away from cigarettes.PMID:38142579 | DOI:10.1016/j.addbeh.2023.107933 (Source: Addictive Behaviors)

The company you keep: The neglected role of affiliating with delinquent friends in the development of the cannabis-violence link
Addict Behav. 2023 Dec 19;151:107939. doi: 10.1016/j.addbeh.2023.107939. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA growing body of research suggests a potential role of cannabis use on aggressive behaviors. In literature on adolescents, the lack of consideration of important confounders, such as adolescent's affiliation with delinquent peers, limits the possibility to determine whether there might be a direct or indirect link between cannabis use and aggression. Therefore, we sought to examine the effect of delinquent peers on the association between cannabis use and violence. We re-analyzed data from 850 ninth graders who were foll...
