Alexis retractor efficacy in transthoracic thoracoscopically assisted discectomy for thoracic disc herniations
ConclusionUse of the flexible and intuitive Alexis retractor maximises operative exposure and is an effective adjunct when performing complex transthoracic approaches for thoracic disc herniations. (Source: Acta Neurochirurgica)

The association between head injury and facial fracture treatment: an observational study of hospitalized bicyclists from a level 1 trauma centre
ConclusionBicyclists with more severe head injuries had increased odds for midface fractures and surgical correction of orbital fractures. During trauma triage, the head and the face should be considered as one unit. (Source: Acta Neurochirurgica)

Cisternal nicardipine for prevention of delayed cerebral ischemia in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage: a comparative retrospective cohort study
ConclusionAdministration of intrathecal nicardipine for moderate to severe CV reduces the rate of DCI and improved long-term functional outcomes in patients with high modified Fisher grade aSAH. This study also showed a relative benefit of cisternal over intraventricular nicardipine, thereby reducing the number of angioplasties performed in the post-treatment phase. However, these preliminary results should be confirmed with future prospective studies. (Source: Acta Neurochirurgica)

Biportal endoscopic transforaminal thoracic interbody fusion for the treatment of thoracic myelopathy
ConclusionBiportal endoscopic transforaminal thoracic interbody fusion can be a feasible technique for treating thoracic spondylotic myelopathy at the thoracolumbar junction levels. (Source: Acta Neurochirurgica)

Direct superior sagittal sinus puncture via a surgical burr hole for curative embolization of the complex transverse-sigmoid sinus dural arteriovenous fistula: How I do it
ConclusionThe direct puncture of the superior sagittal sinus is a safe and effective method for treating complex dAVFs. This approach grants access to the fistula channel which facilitates curative embolization. (Source: Acta Neurochirurgica)

Flow diversion of ruptured intracranial aneurysms: a single-center study with a standardized antithrombotic treatment protocol
ConclusionWe found no major differences in the incidence of ischemic or hemorrhagic complications after the implementation of a standardized antithrombotic protocol for acute flow diversion for ruptured IAs. There is an urgent need for more evidence-based guidelines to optimize antithrombotic treatment after flow diversion in the setting of subarachnoid hemorrhage. (Source: Acta Neurochirurgica)

Ventriculostomy-associated infection (VAI) in patients with acute brain injury —a retrospective study
ConclusionIn patients with acute brain injury and an EVD, our proposed combined cut-off for ruling out VAI performed satisfactorily. Days to sample and CSF WBC/RBC ratio were found independent predictors for VAI in the multivariable logistic regression model. (Source: Acta Neurochirurgica)
