Effects of smartwatch usage on Children's street-crossing behavior and visual attention allocation: An experimental study on street crossing in a real road environment
This study elucidated the characteristics of the effects of smartwatch usage on the street-crossing behavior of children and the influence pattern of the visual attention allocation and revealed the hazards of smartwatch usage on the street-crossing safety. It can contribute to improving the safety cognition of children distracted by smartwatch usage and reducing the occurrence of distracting behaviors while crossing streets. The results can provide a theoretical basis for scientific interventions and safety improvement measures.PMID:37925759 | DOI:10.1016/j.aap.2023.107364 (Source: Accident; Analysis and Prevention.)

Examining safe spaces for pedestrians and e-bicyclists at urban crosswalks: An analysis based on drone-captured video
This study presents the idea of "safe spaces," outlining the buffer zones that both walkers and e-bicyclists maintain when crossing streets, while also taking safety and psychological well-being into consideration. We used drones to gather the study's trajectory data at three significant crossings in Xi'an, China. Multi-coordinate system transformation enabled us to determine the relative positions of individuals and moving objects within their visual domain. Relative position frequency heat maps were generated to explore safe distance demands in different directions. The safety space was then fitted using the least square...

Vision Zero and Impaired Driving: Near and Longer-Term Opportunities for Preventing Death and Injuries
Accid Anal Prev. 2023 Nov 2;194:107344. doi: 10.1016/j.aap.2023.107344. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTVision Zero involves the use of a systems approach to eliminate fatal and serious injuries from motor vehicle crashes by accommodating basic human limitations that lead to crashes through fundamental behavioral expectations, together with sound vehicle and road design. Alcohol-related crashes account for a significant proportion of motor vehicle crash death and injury and can be addressed in a safe road transport system. We look at near-term policy and program interventions that are known to motivate drivers to make safe d...

Investigating transportation safety in disadvantaged communities by integrating crash and Environmental Justice data
Accid Anal Prev. 2023 Nov 2;194:107366. doi: 10.1016/j.aap.2023.107366. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRecent efforts to identify disadvantaged communities (DACs) on a census tract level have evoked possibilities of attaining transportation justice and vision zero goals in these areas. To identify DACs, the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) has developed six comprehensive indicators: economy, environment, equity, health, resilience, and transportation access. The indicators are used to explore the associations between DACs (in 71,728 census tracts) and five years of fatal crashes, providing a comprehensive ...
