Developing a taxonomy of hazards and hazard mitigation strategies for Motorised mobility scooter users
Accid Anal Prev. 2023 Dec 10;195:107423. doi: 10.1016/j.aap.2023.107423. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe increased use of motorised mobility scooters (MMSs) presents a road safety challenge as using a MMS has risks for the user, pedestrians, and other road users. In relation to enhancing MMS driving safety, much of the training and available literature focuses on training vehicular control. Equally important is the need to investigate higher-order cognitive skills involved in driving MMSs, particularly hazard perception. Through a large questionnaire study with MMS users, we develop a taxonomy of the types of hazard MMS ...

Safety performance analysis of horizontal curves in urban areas
This study aims to narrow this knowledge gap in three aspects: it focuses on urban areas; it uses a large novel GIS dataset of about 25,000 urban curves; and it expands the traditional curve risk factor pool by examining the spatial relationship of curves to adjacent curves and intersections. Using this curve dataset and six years of statewide fatal and injury crash data in the state of Florida, the study develops customized safety performance functions (SPFs) for urban curves based on different spatial relationships of curves to intersections. The results confirm that the traditional risk factors for rural curves, such as...

Effects of insomnia on risky driving behavior among bus drivers: The mediating effect of mental health
Accid Anal Prev. 2023 Dec 7;195:107419. doi: 10.1016/j.aap.2023.107419. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCrashes caused by problems with bus drivers' physical and mental health have increased in frequency in recent years. Insomnia, a common type of sleep problem, has significant positive relationships with both crash risk and mental health problems, especially anxiety and depression, which are themselves associated with driving behavior. However, few studies have conducted analysis on sleep-related problems and mental health exclusively on bus drivers, nor on how these problems influence driving performance. Thus, this study ...

Critical voxel learning with vision transformer and derivation of logical AV safety assessment scenarios
Accid Anal Prev. 2023 Dec 7;195:107422. doi: 10.1016/j.aap.2023.107422. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSafety assessment is an active research subject for autonomous vehicles (AVs) that have emerged as a new mode of mobility. In particular, scenario-based safety assessments have garnered significant attention. AVs can be tested on how they safely avoid hypothetical situations leading to accidents. However, scenarios written by humans based on their expert knowledge and experience may only partially reflect real-world situations. Instead, we are keen on a different technique of extracting statistically significant and more d...

Qualitative data collection to identify truck drivers' attitudes toward a transition to platooning systems
Accid Anal Prev. 2023 Dec 7;195:107405. doi: 10.1016/j.aap.2023.107405. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe platooning technology allows for two or more trucks running in convoy at a pre-defined distance between each other, being virtually connected using connectivity technology and automated driving support systems. It is recognized that truck platooning systems bring economical and environmental advantages. Thus, it is time for a transition from the existing truck freight activity towards truck platooning systems. This requires an important improvement in terms of in-vehicle technology, together with infrastructure improve...

Alternative approaches to modeling heterogeneity to analyze injury severity sustained by motorcyclists in two-vehicle crashes
Accid Anal Prev. 2023 Dec 6;195:107417. doi: 10.1016/j.aap.2023.107417. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe presence of unobserved factors in the motorcycle involved two-vehicle crashes (MV) data could lead to heterogenous associations between observed factors and injury severity sustained by motorcyclists. Capturing such heterogeneities necessitates distinct methodological approaches, of which random and scale heterogeneity models are paramount. Herein, we undertake an empirical evaluation of random and scale heterogeneity models, exploring their efficacy in delineating the influence of external determinants on the degree o...

Mining the accident causes of railway dangerous goods transportation: A Logistics-DT-TFP based approach
Accid Anal Prev. 2023 Dec 6;195:107421. doi: 10.1016/j.aap.2023.107421. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAccurately and quickly mining the hidden information in railway dangerous goods transportation (RDGT) accident reports has great significance for its safety management. In this paper, a data mining method Logistics-DT-TFP is proposed for analysing the causes of RDGT accidents. Firstly, analyse the transportation process, extract the cause of the accident, and classify the severity of the accident. Then, using ordered multi-classification Logistic regression for correlation calculation, qualitatively judge and quantitativel...

Exploring the Behaviour Change Wheel and the Theoretical Domains Framework in interventions for mobile phone driver distraction: A scoping review
Accid Anal Prev. 2023 Dec 6;195:107369. doi: 10.1016/j.aap.2023.107369. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMobile phone use while driving remains a significant traffic safety concern. Although numerous interventions have been developed to address it, there is a gap in the synthesis of relevant information through a comprehensive behaviour change lens. This scoping review uses the Behaviour Change Wheel (BCW) and the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF) to examine the literature to (a) identify behavioural constructs targeted in interventions for mobile phone use while driving, (b) determine if the intervention success varied by ...
