Dynamic short-term crash analysis and prediction at toll plazas for proactive safety management
This study utilizes traffic, geometric, and weather data to analyze and predict dynamic short-term collision occurrence probability at mainline toll plazas. A random-effects logit regression model is employed to identify crash precursors and assess their impacts on the probability of crash occurrence at toll plazas. Meanwhile, a Long Short-Term Memory Convolutional Neural Network (LSTM-CNN) network is applied for crash prediction. The results of random-effects logit regression model indicate that the flow standard deviation of downstream, upstream occupancy, speed difference and occupancy difference between upstream and do...

Modeling of single-vehicle and multi-vehicle truck-involved crashes injury severities: A comparative and temporal analysis in a developing country
Accid Anal Prev. 2024 Jan 5;197:107452. doi: 10.1016/j.aap.2023.107452. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTruck-involved crashes persist as a significant concern, yielding noteworthy human casualties and causing economic ramifications, particularly in developing countries. This paper aims to undertake a comprehensive analysis of the associated factors influencing injury severity in truck-involved crashes, with a particular emphasis on discerning variations between single-vehicle and multi-vehicle incidents, as well as accounting for heterogeneity and temporal stability. The data analysis involves a meticulous examination of cr...

Police and hospital data linkage for traffic injury surveillance: A systematic review
Accid Anal Prev. 2024 Jan 5;197:107426. doi: 10.1016/j.aap.2023.107426. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis systematic review examines studies of traffic injury that involved linkage of police crash data and hospital data and were published from 1994 to 2023 worldwide in English. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were the basis for selecting papers from PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus, and for identifying additional relevant papers using PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) and supplementary snowballing (n = 60). The selected papers were reviewed in terms of research objectives, data...

The effect of rear bicycle light configurations on drivers' perception of cyclists' presence and proximity
In conclusion, flashing rear cycle lights, regardless of reactive technology, enhanced drivers' perception of a cyclist ahead, notably in terms of their judgements of distance to that cyclist. Further investigation is needed to fully understand the impact of cycle light technology on driver perception, as well as the use of drivers' distance-to-cyclist estimates as an index of cyclists' cognitive conspicuity.PMID:38181567 | DOI:10.1016/j.aap.2023.107418 (Source: Accident; Analysis and Prevention.)

Impact of real-time weather conditions on crash injury severity in Kentucky using the correlated random parameters logit model with heterogeneity in means
Accid Anal Prev. 2024 Jan 3;196:107453. doi: 10.1016/j.aap.2023.107453. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe present study investigated the impact of real-time weather (air temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, wind speed, and solar radiation) on crash injury severity. Recent crash data (January 2016 to April 2021) on Interstate-75 in the state of Kentucky were merged with real-time weather information (retrieved from Kentucky Mesonet stations) at the 1-hour level. The severity index "SI" (i.e., the ratio of percent severe crashes to percent exposure of a specific weather state during the crash period) was introduced...

Unraveling the differences in distracted driving injury severities in passenger car, sport utility vehicle, pickup truck, and minivan crashes
This study investigates into the severity of driver injuries resulting from distracted driving in these vehicle categories, shedding light on the variations in single-vehicle crashes. Focusing on single-vehicle crashes in Florida during 2019, involving passenger cars, SUVs, pickup trucks, and minivans caused by distracted driving, the study examines various distractions such as, electronic communication devices (cell phones), electronic devices (navigation systems, music players), internal and external disturbances, texting, and inattentive driving. To analyze the severity of injuries resulting from distracted driving in p...

Safety assessment of on-road cycling lanes: A comparative study of different layouts using driving simulator
Accid Anal Prev. 2024 Jan 2;196:107431. doi: 10.1016/j.aap.2023.107431. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOver the past few decades, a growing attention has been directed toward cycling due to its positive impacts on social, economic, and health aspects. Various countries are adopting and implementing strategies to promote cycling as a daily mode of transport. The main objective of this study is to improve cyclists' safety by investigating the impact of different layouts of on-road cycle lanes at two-lane two-way roads on drivers' interactions with cyclists using driving simulator. Three layouts of on-road cycle lanes were tes...

Software-defined traffic light preemption for faster emergency medical service response in smart cities
Accid Anal Prev. 2024 Jan 2;196:107425. doi: 10.1016/j.aap.2023.107425. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTProper management of rescue operations following an accident is one of the most fundamental challenges faced by today's smart cities. Taking advantage of vehicular communications, in this paper we propose novel mechanisms for the acceleration of the rescue operation resulting in a reduction in fatalities in accidents. We propose a Software-Defined Traffic Light Preemption (SD-TLP) mechanism that enables Emergency Medical Vehicles (EMVs) to travel along the rescue route with minimal interruptions. The SD-TLP makes preemptio...

Are crash causation studies the best way to understand system failures - Who can we blame?
Accid Anal Prev. 2023 Dec 31;196:107432. doi: 10.1016/j.aap.2023.107432. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe search for common and serious single causes of road crashes naturally leads to a concentration on the road user. This is supported by a legal framework in the search for the main cause and the suspect for this cause. In prevention, we havefor decades been more inclined to look for systematic improvements of all elements of the road transport system, and we direct the recommendations for actions towards system designers, organizations, products and services. In this paper the discussion about causation and prevention i...
