CT abdomen IV contrast vs IV & oral contrast
THis is a question I had been wondering about... When do you guys order IV and oral contrast for a abdominal CT scan? In other words, when would you definitely add oral contrast? From what I understand IV contrast is sufficient for things like diverticulitis, colitis. At my shop, IV contrast ONLY is sufficient for the following: BMI > 20 Age > 25 No history of GI tract altering surgery (e.g. gastric bypass) No history or suspicion of inflammatory bowel disease No abdominal or pelvic surgery... Crohn's Disease and Gallstones (Black vs Cholesterol)
Hey guys, Rounding out near the end of the block and am stumped by a robbins questions. Basically pt has cholesterol stones and I narrow it down to: - hyper-secretion of biliary cholesterol - ileal resection from Crohn's I pick ileal resection from Crohn's because I've learned that bile acids are recirculating and the lack of the bile acids creates opportunity for oversaturation by cholesterol. Answer key differs, indicating according to Robbins that ileal involvement is a risk factor for... Crohn's Disease and Gallstones (Black vs Cholesterol) (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Medical Waivers
For a long time, I've been aspiring to be a military physician. Unfortunately, I have ulcerative colitis which I found out is a disqualifying condition. It's extremely manageable with anti-inflammatory medication (nothing like heavy immunosuppressants) and is fairly moderate/mild. I haven't had a flare since my diagnosis. My question is as a physician, is receiving a medical waiver easier? If so, which branches would be more lenient? My ultimate goal was to hopefully join the Navy and serve... Dealing with IBS/IBD on rotations
Does anyone else that has done rotations or is going to do them have IBS, ulcerative colitis, or Crohns? I do, and I'm worried about how it will affect me and my ability to do the work. I've been seeing a specialist, but nothing has helped. It's not debilitating, but basically I might have to run to the bathroom more than others - like 3-4 times a day, and not necessarily at opportune times. It's much worse when I'm nervous, which of course I will be. Any suggestions/support and similar... Dealing with IBS/IBD on rotations (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Different scans
I am not sure where to ask these types of questions. I am starting medical school next semester and I know what the different scans look like but I get confused when you would use a CT scan vs an MRI vs ultrasound. I am just curious if someone could direct me to a website or tell me. For example, you would use this type of scan for cancer, this type of scan for crohns disease. I just see all these diseases and they each have their own way of Diagnosing it with scans but is there a way to... Different scans (Source: Student Doctor Network)
