Key enzyme found in disease-causing bacteria responsible for heart valve disease
A disease-causing bacterium found in the mouth needs manganese, a trace mineral, in order to cause a serious heart infection, according to a preclinical study. Researchers have been studying the bacterium Streptococcus sanguinis to understand its role in infective endocarditis, a heart valve disease. The infection is hard to treat and can be deadly, killing more than 20 percent of the people who contract it. The findings, which may solve a longstanding mystery of why some bacteria need manganese to cause disease, provide possible new targets for antibiotics. (Source: ScienceDaily Headlines)

Yersinia enterocolitica: a Rare Cause of Infective Endocarditis and Mycotic Aneurysm
Yersinia enterocolitica is a facultative, anaerobic, gram-negative coccobacillus taxonomically assigned within the family Enterobacteriaceae. The genus Yersinia consists of 11 different species; however, only 3 of these species are pathogenic for humans—Yersinia pestis, the causative agent of plague, and two enteropathogenic species, Yersinia pseudotuberculosis and Yersinia enterocolitica. Y. enterocolitica is a food-borne pathogen typically associated with diarrhea, terminal ileitis, and mesenteric lymphadenitis. It is occasionally associated with invasive and metastatic diseases, as well (). When cultivated in the labo...

Molecular Analysis of Staphylococcal Superantigens
Staphylococcal superantigens (SAgs) comprise a large family of exotoxins produced by Staphylococcus aureus strains. These exotoxins are important in a variety of serious human diseases, including menstrual and nonmenstrual toxic shock syndrome (TSS), staphylococcal pneumonia and infective endocarditis, and recently described staphylococcal purpura fulminans and extreme pyrexia syndrome. In addition, these SAg exotoxins are being increasingly recognized for their possible roles in many other human diseases, such as atopic dermatitis, Kawasaki syndrome, nasal polyposis, and certain autoimmune disorders. To clarify the full s...

Using a large Canadian database, researchers looked at the occurrence of infective endocarditis between 1988 and 2010 in 47,518 children with heart defects. On average the risk of infection by age 18 was 6... (Source: Health News from Medical News Today)
