Molecular Dynamics Simulation and NMR Investigation of the Association of the β-Blockers Atenolol and Propranolol with a Chiral Molecular Micelle.
This study is part of a larger effort to understand the mechanism of chiral recognition in capillary electrophoresis by characterizing the molecular micelle binding of chiral compounds with different geometries and charges. Propranolol and atenolol were chosen because their structures are similar, but their chiral interactions with the molecular micelle are different. Molecular dynamics simulations showed both propranolol enantiomers inserted their aromatic rings into the molecular micelle core and that (S)-propranolol associated more strongly with the molecular micelle than (R)-propranolol. This difference was attributed ...

How Common Are Tremors in Childhood?
Discussion Tremor is one of several movement disorders in childhood including tics, dystonia, chorea, myoclonus, and sterotypy. Tremors are a rhythmic oscillating involuntary movement across a joint axis. They are the result of normal or accentuated postural or muscular processes. They are categorized as follows: Rest tremor – occurs during rest and stops with movement Action tremor- occurs during a voluntary activity Kinetic tremor- occurs when limb is moving Postural tremor – occurs when the limb is stationary but held against gravity Isometric tremor – occurs when limb is stationary but is exerting a...

Update on Propranolol for Infantile Hemangioma: Where Are We Now?
The discovery of propranolol for the treatment of infantile hemangioma in 2008 has revolutionized management of this condition. Hundreds of reports have corroborated the initial published findings that propranolol is a safe and efficacious therapeutic agent. Furthermore, it is well tolerated in infants and can markedly alter the natural history and potential disfigurement of these lesions. The goal of this review is to outline the salient features of infantile hemangioma and the optimal use of propranolol as a first-line treatment modality. (Source: NeoReviews recent issues)

Beta-blockers expand treatment options for infantile hemangiomas
VANCOUVER, B.C. – Propranolol may have revolutionized the treatment of infantile hemangiomas over the past decade, but other beta-blockers are making inroads in the treatment of these and other pediatric dermatologic disorders. One such beta-blocker is atenolol, a hydrophilic cardioselective agent...googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-cta'); (Source: Skin and Allergy News)

Could meditation help combat migraines?
ConclusionThis pilot RCT, based on just 19 adult migraine sufferers, showed an eight-week mindfulness-based stress reduction course led to benefits for headache duration, disability, self-efficacy and mindfulness measures, compared to a control group who received usual care. There were non-significant benefits observed for measures of migraine frequency and severity. Both groups continued to take any migraine medication (prophylactic or for treatment during a headache) they were already taking before the trial. The research group themselves were very reasonable in their conclusions and called for larger trials to be done t...
