Oxygen Straight to the Brain: An Overview of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for a Variety of Brain Morbidities
Curr Sports Med Rep. 2024 Apr 1;23(4):130-136. doi: 10.1249/JSR.0000000000001158.ABSTRACTHyperbaric oxygen therapy as a treatment for conditions like traumatic brain injury, posttraumatic stress disorder, and migraines would seem intuitive, given its effect on condition-related ischemia and inflammation. However, hyperbaric therapeutic impacts for these in acute and chronic, or prolonged symptoms are elusive. This narrative review of hyperbaric's utility provided in sections per disease renders first a review of conventional pathological mechanisms and then articulates hyperbaric treatment targets versus their respective i...

Successful Treatment of Severe Aplastic Anemia with Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation in the Setting of Active Mucormycosis
AbstractSevere aplastic anemia (SAA) is a life-threatening hematological disease characterized by the suppression of the bone marrow. Patients with SAA are predisposed to recurrent bacterial infections and invasive fungal infections (IFI) due to profound and persistent neutropenia. Mucorales are the second most common cause of IFI encountered in SAA. Here we present a pediatric case of SAA with active mucormycosis infection of the paranasal sinuses. In the first step, surgical debridement was performed and combined antifungal therapy (liposomal amphotericin B, posaconazole, caspofungin) was started. Due to severe neutropen...

Hypobaric hypoxia exposure regulates tissue distribution of nanomedicine for enhanced cancer therapy
ConclusionsThe liposomal nanomedicine with adjuvant hypobaric hypoxia exposure significantly inhibited the growth of orthotopic liver tumor for prolonged survival time, achieved by hypobaric hypoxia-promoted accumulation at tumor sites of the liver. It might be the first example of the application of adjuvant intermittent hypobaric hypoxia exposure in treating liver cancer. (Source: Cancer Nanotechnology)
