Meatless Monday Recipe: Peppermint Patty Green Monster Smoothie
Happy Meatless Monday and happy St. Patrick’s Day! In honor of St. Patrick’s Day I wanted to share one of my favorite, festive, and deceptively healthy green smoothie recipes: Peppermint Patty Green Monster Smoothie. This kid-friendly smoothie is packed to the brim with deliciously minty and chocolatey flavor, with the added bonus of masking the spinach (you’re family will never know what hit them!). This smoothie recipe is perfect for breakfast or dessert and can be doubled, tripled, or quadrupled to accommodate the little leprechauns in your life. Forget the Diet Plans: The No-Brainer Way to Eat Healthy AND Lose Weight
During my life I’ve had a love/hate view of “the meal plan” segment of diet books. I want to make it work, but often it just takes too much time and effort to follow the plan and so I don’t stick with it for more than a couple days. I’ve read many many books and articles on nutrition, food as medicine, and weight loss. In that time I’ve come up with a simple formula that I use to eat healthy and lose/maintain weight. What follows is a simple approach to eating that is both healthy and conducive to losing/maintaining your desired weight. The 5 Pillars of Healthy Eating Remembering...

Short list, long post
A Brief List of What Has Improved Since Charlie Started at Hippie Do As You Please SchoolEverythingThere. See you again in six months!...Perhaps I'll get more specific. But first I'll have to work hard to cast my mind back to where we were at the end of second grade. It's a little hard to remember, because human consciousness mercifully retains only the outlines of past agony instead of actually recreating the sensation of repeatedly dropping an anvil on your foot every time you recall it. Just, K through 2 were hell on a pedicure, is all I'll say about that. This year is different. Instead of tears, a...

Steph: “Wheat is not worth it”
I asked Wheat Belly follower and success story, Steph, to share some of her wheat-free experience: WB: What prompted you to eliminate wheat? Steph: I had tried a “controlled carb” diet years ago and had some success. Of course, still eating carbs and wheat, it was pretty impossible to stay with this type of eating, especially since eating wheat just makes me lust for more carbs! Once I got interested in what Wheat Belly had to say about how eating wheat makes us want MORE, I had to read the whole thing. Once I did, I thought that the easiest way for me to see for myself was to try it. I went cold turkey on Jul...

The Healthful Vegan Diet
‘Let your food be your medicine, and your medicine be your food.’ ~Hippocrates By Leo Babauta Eat plants. Those two words are the best things I’ve learned about diet, and if you stick to that, you’re likely be pretty healthy. That said, eating a vegan diet (no animal products) doesn’t necessarily equate to a healthy diet, despite what many believe. Yes, vegans on average are healthier and leaner than the average person. But that’s an average — there are unhealthy vegans. How is that possible? You can eat lots of sweets, fried foods, processed foods, foods with white flour (br...

what did i do wrong?
OK internet, help me out here:I've been looking for a recipe for healthy snack bars, to replace store bought "chewy" bars. The bars can't contain nuts or peanuts. My nutritionist sent me a recipe for Chocolate Date Protein bars. I made the bars, following the recipe exactly and ended up with a very, very tasty paste - too sticky to be rolled into balls, let alone made into bars. She's away indefinitely and I can't find a comparable recipe online. Can someone figure out how to give these bars more integrity?I used ground hemp. Could that be the problem? Is it possible to buy whole seeds? Would that help?I don't want to post s...

Ask the Nutritionist: Calcium Supplements, Yes, No, WTF?
Got questions about healthy eating and nutrition? Well, today starts a new feature at Cranky Fitness: Ask the Nutritionist! It could also rightfully be called "Ask the Dietitian," since both the contributors are RD's. I almost did call it that, but then decided to play it safe in case either of these two knowledgeable and articulate experts figures out what a silly blog this is and decides to bail.  What if I need to find someone new and have to cast a wider net?  No certification, but pretty darn sensible! Plus, half the time I spell it "Dietitian" and the other half "Dietician" and that was driving me...

Clock Ticking On Colorado’s Marijuana Repeal Bill
Proposal to revote on pot legalization is losing steam. While the rest of the nation argues over Colorado’s recent decision to legalize limited amounts of marijuana, a small but determined group of legislators in that state have been promoting a bill that would allow a “conditional repeal” of the pot amendment. The proposal to resubmit the question of retail marijuana sales to Colorado voters is supported by Senate President John Morse (D-Colorado Springs) and Senate Minority Leader Bill Cadman (R-Colorado Springs). The proposed ballot measure would first ask voters to approve previously promised higher tax rat...
