Geriatric Medicine and the Challenges of Transitions of Care in the Rural Health Sector
Although geriatric medicine and primary care are essentially similar forms of care for older adults, physicians and advanced practice providers (APPs) who are trained specifically in geriatrics know what not to do. When I first started my practice two years ago in my rural town in northern California, the older adult patients who came in for their primary care visit were genuinely shocked when I told them I was trained in geriatric medicine. Most were not even aware that geriatric medicine is a separate field of study. (Source: Caring for the Ages)

Energizing Networks and Ideas: How the Futures Program Impacted My Career
My first experience in a post-acute and long-term care (PALTC) setting was during my geriatrics rotation in residency at the Medical University of South Carolina. It was here where I solidified my decision to pursue a career in geriatrics, specifically in PALTC. The first time I heard about the Futures Program was from a long-time member of AMDA – The Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine while I was interviewing for a geriatric medicine fellowship. America Has No Way to Take Care of Mentally Ill People
With evermore unhoused people on the streets of our biggest cities, and publicized subway crimes in New York, mental health treatment is again in the news. Politicians speak about “caring” for the mentally ill in a new way, which turns out to be the old way—putting them away. The mention of involuntary confinement, predictably, sparks anxiety and controversy, giving rise to the question of whom this policy is meant to help: the people taken away or the rest of population, those shopping, jogging, carrying groceries home, who, presumably, will no longer be bothered by the inconvenient reality of a person s...

Losing a Spouse Makes Men 70% More Likely to Die Within a Year
Losing a spouse forces people into what is often one of the most vulnerable parts of their lives. The negative health consequences of widowhood can stretch years down the line, but in some cases, they don’t get a chance to. The phenomenon in which both halves of a couple die in short succession is so common that it even has a name: the widowhood effect. How at risk is any given person? That depends on many contributing factors, from their religion to race and even their spouse’s cause of death. But the widowhood effect is generally believed to be a problem primarily affecting closely bonded elderly couples. [t...
