External quality assessments for SARS-CoV-2 genome detection in Austria : A  comparison of the first postpandemic round with results from the pandemic era
CONCLUSION: Overall ratios of true positive results were below the mean of all results during the pandemic but were similar to the first round of the pandemic. A lower post-pandemic true positive ratio was associated with specific laboratory types and assay formats, particularly for samples with low concentration. The EQAs will continue to monitor the laboratory performance to ensure the same quality of epidemiological data after the pandemic, even if vigilance has decreased.PMID:38653873 | DOI:10.1007/s00508-024-02353-1 (Source: Wiener Klinische Wochenschrift)

Rhinovirus infection presenting with symptomatic hyponatremia —Atypical presentation of a common infection
Key Clinical MessageRhinovirus infection has the potential to exhibit unconventional symptoms like symptomatic hyponatremia. Health care professionals should remain vigilant about this potential complication, especially in cases with uncommon presentations. Timely identification and effective management of hyponatremia can mitigate potential complications and enhance patient prognosis.AbstractThe syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH) is a prominent contributor to low sodium levels. Various factors can contribute to hyponatremia, affecting the diagnosis and treatment of the condition. Of note, ...

Poorly differentiated neuroendocrine carcinoma originating in the subglottic larynx: A case report with imm unohistochemical study
Laryngoscopic images showing a red mass in the sub glottis (black arrow). Key Clinical MessageLaryngeal neuroendocrine carcinomas are the most common non-squamous neoplasm of the larynx. Due to the rarity of the tumor, pathological diagnosis should be confirmed by immunohistochemistry.AbstractLaryngeal neuroendocrine carcinomas (LNECs) are a rare cancer of the head and neck. Few case reports of poorly differentiated neuroendocrine carcinoma originating in the subglottic larynx exist within the literature. In this case, we discuss a 57-year-old patient with a history of four-month hoarseness with a newly diagnosed of poorly...

Hybrid surgical approach excision of gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST): A case report of GIST at an unusual location and review of the literature
Key Clinical MessageGastrointestinal stromal tumors are the most common malignant subepithelial lesions involving the gastrointestinal tract. Surgical techniques have been the mainstay of treatment, however, in recent times hybrid surgeries are being introduced yielding better clinical outcomes. (Source: Clinical Case Reports)

Continuous renal replacement therapy for lithium toxicity: A worthy treatment to avoid intradialytic hypotension and vasopressors
Key Clinical MessageWhile intermittent hemodialysis (HD) is the most efficient method of removing lithium in patients with lithium toxicity, continuous renal replacement therapy is an acceptable alternative in the setting of intradialytic hypotension. This form of dialysis can reduce the need for vasopressors during HD, which increases mortality. (Source: Clinical Case Reports)

A case of diffuse large B ‐cell lymphoma with decompensated alcohol‐related liver cirrhosis treated successfully by chemoimmunotherapy
This report describes a case of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma with MYD88 L265P and KM2DT mutation and decompensated alcohol-related liver cirrhosis. And the treatment is successful in this patient, who had multiple complications and poor prognostic factors.AbstractThis report describes a case of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma with MYD88 L265P and KM2DT mutation and decompensated alcohol-related liver cirrhosis. The lymphoma showed a complete response with no MYD88 L265P mutation after four courses of combination chemotherapy. Lymphoma is one of the most common malignant tumors, but cases of DLBCL with cirrhosis are much rar...

Sore throat, fever, and pancytopenia during winter
Key Clinical MessageCare must be taken to mitigate the effect of cognitive bias in times of frequent common presentations. The etiology of bicytopenias and pancytopenias must always be carefully investigated. Blast cells in low count B ALL may not be seen on a peripheral smear and diagnosis often requires confirmational bone marrow aspirate with flow cytometry and molecular typing. Atrial tachycardia ablation through the sub ‐pulmonary ventricle in a patient with multiple malformations associated with congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries and double‐sided slow‐pathway
Key Clinical MessageA 46-year-old woman with congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries (ccTGA) associated with dextrocardia, situs viscerus inversus, and left superior vena cava persistence presented with an incessant supraventricular tachycardia. Electrophysiological study was not conclusive in differential diagnosis of atrial tachycardia versus atypical atrioventricular (AV) nodal reentrant tachycardia, also due to the unconventional anatomy of the coronary sinus. By a comprehensive mapping of cardiac chambers, a double side slow-pathway was localized in both atrial chambers and subsequently ablated by r...
