Health Disparities among Sexual and Gender Minorities (SGM) - Day 2
The goal of this virtual two-day meeting is to identify priority research areas to understand and address SGM health disparities. Specifically, the workshop objectives are to identify research gaps in: (1) data sources and measures that can be used to assess and address SGM health disparities, (2) mechanisms and pathways that drive/cause SGM health disparities, and (3) interventions with the potential to mitigate/reduce SGM health disparities. The workshop will bring together a diverse set of researchers with expertise on important health outcomes (e.g., cancer, mental/behavioral health, cardiovascular disease, diabetes an...

James H. Cassedy Lecture in the History of Medicine: The Many Faces of Diabetes: Complications and Debility in Late 20th   Century America
14th annual James H. Cassedy Lecture in the History of Medicine: Diabetes has played a key role in multiple twentieth century movements from the Progressive era to Black Lives Matter.   Diabetes is also a window into the many complications of this chronic disease, including amputations, chronic kidney failure, disability, and the ramifications of racism as a public health threat.   The many complications of diabetes reveal questions of structural inequality, environmental racism, and medical neglect that inform disease experience. Highlighting the use of some NLM historical collections and his broader work with the hig...

Waistline to the Gumline: Defining Oral Health in Metabolic Syndrome Patients using an Integrated-Omics Approach
Metabolic Syndrome is a growing pandemic, affecting over one-third of US adults with a cluster of biochemical and physiological abnormalities that predisposes to Type 2 Diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Critically, metabolic syndrome has been linked to oral health, with metabolic syndrome patients twice as likely to suffer from periodontitis. However, the mechanisms behind these associations are unknown. Our work takes the first step in identifying the impact of metabolic syndrome on oral microbial, immune, and metabolic factors.Air date: 9/8/2022 9:30:00 AM (Source: Videocast - All Events)

NLM ADA Lovelace Lecture: Tackling Diabetic Retinopathy in a Safety Net Healthcare Setting with Telehealth and Machine Learning
NLM ADA Lovelace Lecture Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness in working age adults in the United States. It is challenging to address in both rural and urban underserved settings, which suffer from shortages of eye specialists. This talk will describe the approach taken to address this condition in a medically underserved area (South Los Angeles) by researchers in the Center for Biomedical Informatics at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, using telehealth and machine learning on data from patient electronic health records. Omolola Ogunyemi, PhD, FACMI is the Director of Charles R. Drew U...
